Today’s election day. Big day – considering what’s at stake this election, a very big day! What are thinking about? Probably not about buying Mexico real estate and moving down to paradise. But it might not be such a bad idea. Let me tell you why.
One of the important things that Mexico has taught me is this. On election night, you don’t stay up all night watching the results (some people say the counting, etc. could be going on for a while – all night or more – before the results are final and we know who the next president will be.) What will I be doing? Well, maybe I’ll take a little walk on the beach, chat with the neighbors, enjoy the warm weather. Maybe I’ll enjoy a cold drink out on my balcony in the moonlight before going to bed. (The weather is still very summer-like here!)
In the morning, I’ll wake up, drink my morning coffee and go for my routine bike ride before dropping the kids off at school. (School starts early here, but it’s easy to wake up when you know you have a warm sunny paradise waiting for you.)
Basically, it will be just like every other day.
Now don’t get me wrong. The election is important. It’s important who our president will be for the next 4 years, and to know about this. It’s important to vote. It’s all important to me. I probably will check the results coming in before I call it night. Probably again in the morning while eating breakfast with the family. But I’m not going to stress about them.
Mexico has taught me that as important as politics are, real life around you matters that much more. Whoever wins, the beaches are still here, as are family, friends, neighbors, good times …
Living in Mexico, politics matters, but life matters a good deal more.
Maybe while you watch the results come in tonight, take a break now and then; maybe check out some of the beaches in the Riviera Maya. Yes, a lot is at stake in these elections. But just remember that regardless of who wins, the beautiful beaches of Mexico, relaxation, good friends, good neighbors, and a way of living where enjoying the little day to day pleasures of a beautiful place is more important than politics is waiting for you.
