Playa del Carmen’s Most Spectacular Transformations – South Downtown – Part 2: A New Look

Filed Under: How to Buy Real Estate in Mexico, Living and Retirement, Mexico Communities, Mexico Investment Property, Playa del Carmen Real Estate

In yesterday’s post (Playa del Carmen’s Most Spectacular Transformations – South Downtown – Part 1: The History), I talked about the history of the south half of downtown Playa del Carmen, and how it changed from a working-class village to a unkempt downtown neighborhood.

Fortunately, this is not the last transformation the neighborhood has seen. Although there were not many nice properties, it was by far the best location for Playa del Carmen real estate, within sort walking distance of the heart of the tourist district on Fifth and all the items mentioned above, not to mention some of the best beaches in the area. A second transformation – a gentrification or rejuvenation – was bound to happen, and that is what we are seeing now.

This pretty boutique hotel is just a block or two away from the chicken rotisserie shop in the picture in yesterday

The unkempt little homes and lots with thatched-roofed huts (some of which still exist!) are being bought by developers who are offering nice, upscale Mexico condos for sale with spas and gyms, or nice boutique hotels with comfortable atmospheres.

The transformation is far from complete, and it will probably always remain somewhat of a mix. Yet, this mix also adds some appeal. While residents can live in very nice, modern hotels, they can also go around the corner to enjoy tacos, quesadillas and delicious soup in the local lunch shops, or buy fresh produce and seafood in the little markets.

As the community becomes nicer, even some of these are getting painted up, renovated and made to look nice enough that they provide a rather nice complement to the new upscale condos.

This hotel is more geared towards Mexican nationals - located next to the bus station - but is very nice inside with excellent prices!

All of downtown’s services such as banks, supermarkets, dentists, the bus station are also always a walk away.

The neighborhood still offers a truly small-town lifestyle with the benefit of some city services added on top of that. And the new gentrification is offering a comfortable way to enjoy this!
