Mexico retirement property“Can I afford to buy Mexico real estate for my retirement?”

Many people will see a retirement property near the beach in Mexico, or on a golf course, or in a quaint lakeside village, as a kind of luxury – like the well-to-do who own million dollar vacation homes in a ritzy cottage region.

Of course, we all know that properties in Mexico cost less, but still – can you afford just to pay into a second home when retirement funds are somewhat stretched already?

The answer is, “Yes, of course you can.”

A better question might be: “Can I afford NOT to buy a retirement property in Mexico.”

Here’s why.

1. Nice properties for all budgets are available.  As Malu indicated in yesterday’s post about Chan Chemuyil, there are quaint, beautiful homes in nice communities that fit nicely even into lower budgets. Mexico retirement property

2. Many people “make the leap” completely

Owning a home for Mexico retirement does not necessarily have to be a “second” home. Many Americans and Canadians have sold their property house back home and made the leap to make Mexico their new permanent home.

3. Let’s do the math

An average home in the U.S. is about $200,000 USD these days.  Although much more expensive homes are available in Mexico, a nice home for retirement can be found for about $100,000 USD, or even less depending on which region you’re interested in. Selling a property back home to buy in Mexico could leave you a nice extra chunk of savings for retirement.

4. Cost of living is lower

Just about everything – from property taxes to going out for lunch – costs significantly less in Mexico.  Many expats feel that the cost of living is about half.  Your savings will just go that much further. Mexico retirement property

5. Services are excellent!

Whether it’s state-of-the-art healthcare or modern supermarkets, Mexico is modernizing quickly and offers most of the same conveniences and services we’re used to from the U.S. or Canada (at lower prices, of course.) So, think about those points.  Can you afford not to buy a home in Mexico for retirement?
