Filed Under: Amara Condos, Cancun Real Estate, Living and Retirement

The history of Cancun (or CUN as is known by locals) is full of mystery since the very early days of this town. During the Mayan Classic Period there where three different settlement within the area; today they are known as the archaeological sites of El Meco, which is located inland, on front of Isla Mujeres; Yamil Lu´um and El Rey along the two islands that are part of the city´s Hotel Zone until the city’s “birth”.

Late Sixties Vision

Cancun before and after
Aereal shot of Cancun in the 70s and today

History says that by 1968, a group of Mexican investors and bankers were looking for a place on Mexico´s coastal line that would make the perfect vacation spot. By that time the most popular vacation destination in the country was Acapulco and the vision was to replicate that success.

So, after travelling and camping all over the country, the project of making the little know area of Cancun was approved and on 1970 the first camp was settled. There is not an accurate date for a 1st stone ceremony but the common sentiment is to commemorate the city’s birth on April 20th.

Cancun Today

Let´s fast forward to April 2014; just yesterday the city of Cancun started the activities of its 44th birthday with religious services, mariachis, parades, free concerts and more cultural activities. Growing into a cosmopolitan city with state of the art services and accommodations, is much more than just blue and turquoise water sea with white and powdery sand beaches.
