How do you imagine life in Cancun? If you choose to live in Mexico for your retirement, or otherwise, you may actually be surprised how you spend your time. Usually we focus on the beaches, the theme parks, archaeological sight seeing, etc. While the beaches are always close by (and you’ll probably make your way down quite frequently), the other activities won’t be points that define your day to day life, (although you WILL enjoy them on occassion.)
What will day to day life be like? Maybe you’ll enjoy breakfast on your balcony overlooking the ocean, or maybe you’ll prefer to relax inside, reading the paper or watching the news (in English, of course.) Afterwards maybe you’ll take a walk down the beach, stop and chat with some of the neighbors, or maybe a drive downtown (in car or taxi – taxi’s are cheap here) to Starbucks or a local cafe to enjoy a good morning coffee – again you’ll find some of the regular expats there.
If you like shopping you might take a trip to one of many shopping centers in the city, where you can find a fairly good combination of stuff from back home, and high-quality goods from Mexico; high-quality Mexican shoes can be found for reasonable prices; if you need a larger size, however, there are only a hand full of stores that carry them!

If you play golf, you might take advantage of the cooler mornings to enjoy a game – there are many good courses in the area. Maybe a walk in one of the city parks will be your cup of tea.
Besides finding your friends in many of your favorite places every day, you will have many ways to get together with other expats; social clubs exist, and there are many local bars frequented by retirees from the U.S. or Canada. You could enjoy a snack of seafood in a restaurant with a thatched roof, overlooking the beach, or in a sports bar with pool tables. Many expats come to Mexico for the same reason as you – relaxation. Finding people with time will never be a problem.
In the evening maybe another walk on the beach, or relaxing on some lawn chairs having a few drinks with the neighbors.
While some aspects look similar to retirement back home, the fact that retirees come here for relaxation, and Mexico is a laid-back culture will mean that in general, everything is just more easy-going.
Another huge point is that it’s cheaper – everything from Cancun real estate, to the drinks you’ll be enjoying cost considerably less than in the U.S. or Canada. Healthcare, also much less expensive, is available at top-quality.
Of course, the Mayan ruins, the ecological theme parks, the nearby colonial cities are also plus; while you won’t be there every day, you will want to make excursions now and then – and you won’t have to go half way around the world to find beautiful little bits of ancient history and culture!
Consider Cancun real estate for retirement – you won’t regret choosing the relaxation of day to day life on the beachfront!
