Over the past few years the Riviera Maya, which stretches from just south of Cancun to Tulum, has emerged as Mexico’s premier tourist destination. With the number of tourists visiting the region doubling from  2005 to 2014, it´s been fueled by new investments like the Riviera Maya’s Mayakoba complex and the fact that the Riviera Maya no longer has a low season.

Cancun airport is approaching 20 million in yearly visitors and  the island of Cozumel, located  off the coast of Playa del Carmen, has seen a jump of 24%  in the amount of cruise ships that arrive. Quintana Roo is designed for tourists with high purchasing power, and now the plan is for for additional hotels and other properties and real estate geared toward the growing local population.
The Riviera Maya has really benefited from the perception of safety, seen as an oasis from violent crime. The state of Quintana Roo – where the Riviera Maya is located- reported 123 murders in 2014, which is roughly 7% of homicides reported in Guerrero during the same time period.

After a decade in the doldrums, the number of tourist arrivals from the U.S. to Mexico reached a record breaking 25.9 million in 2014, an increase of 24%. More U.S. citizens are visiting Mexico than ever before, but the trend appears to be a shift away from Acapulco in favor of the Riviera Maya.
Over the last 15 years more than 100 new hotels have been built in the Riviera Maya by companies like as Hyatt and Thompson. The number of people visiting Mexico’s Riviera Maya topped 4.4 million in 2014 up from 2.2 million in 2005. The number of visitors in 2015 is expected to top 4.5 million. Airline companies  run multiple flights a day connecting Cancun to Mexico City. There are direct flights to Cancun from New York, Toronto and London.
The tourism industry in the Riviera Maya growing at a fast pace. With its´ world-class golf courses, real estate developments, and entertainment such as the Cirque du Soleil dinner theatre and regular festivals of music, art and culture it is likely to remain that way for some time.
