“What They Don’t Know Won’t Hurt Them” … For Now

Published on: Feb 12 2013 by Thomas Lloyd

Professional Brokers in MexicoProfessional brokers dedicated to offering the best service to their clients and finding real estate most suited to those clients’ needs know that buyers need to have all the information available so they can make an educated choice on their property purchase.

The same is true when a broker sends their to buy real estate in Mexico.

But there’s a catch: information is NOT as readily available in Mexico. This true of developments, developers, individual properties, market trends, investment news etc.

In certain ways, this fact opens up more opportunities for the “little guy” giving them the chance to find a great investment before it gets grabbed up by the big investors.

However, brokers will also know very well that information that clients don’t have may not bother them at the moment, but can come back to bite them from behind later on – a situation we want to avoid whenever possible.

This fact means that there needs to be more care and greater attention to to detail, especially in a country where information needs to be investigated more carefully; it’s of utmost importance that buyers newer to the market work with professionals who know how to find the information they need, who know the steps necessary to ensure that the property purchase is safe.

Thanks to the work of AMPI (the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals), professionalism is on the rise in Mexico’s real estate industry. However, progress has only begun and there is still plenty of room to move forward.

For this reason, there it is that much more important for a U.S. or Canadian broker to find an experienced and professional broker in Mexico to send their clients to. Items to look for include:

  • years of experience
  • membership in AMPI
  • degrees and certificates
  • a “cedula profesional” – “professional identification number & certificate”; these are still rare and are most common for fields such as law and medicine, but some leading brokers have gone to the effort to obtain them
  • client references
  • broker references (from the U.S. or Canada)

Professionalism is on the rise in Mexico, but it requires more homework on the part of referring agents to ensure that the broker they are sending their clients is both professional and dedicated to clients’ needs. It is both more work, and more important!

However, the end result will be that those life-long dedicated clients are as happy with the service they receive in Mexico as what they are used to from their trusted broker back home.
