Texas and Mexico universities offer dual degree programs

Many people imagine U.S. – Mexico relations as something that happens when the two presidents meet.  A few (of both nationalities) who have the pleasure of living in expat communities enjoy the pleasure of seeing more direct community relations.

 

Of course, those of us involved in the interactions between AMPI and NAR are seeing strong ties develop in the industry based on very direct, one-to-one relationships.

 

Prof. Michael Dear at Huffington Post is drawing attention to yet another example – the community ties that are being built on both sides at border towns.  Read this excerpt from his article:

 

In McAllen, Texas, 80 percent of businesses were Mexican-owned by the mid-2000s, a reversal of the proportion from a decade earlier. McAllen draws a greater share of Mexican spending than any other US city, affecting everything from retail sales to home purchases and vacation destinations. Most of the money comes from the major industrial metropolis of Monterrey in Nuevo Léon, only two hours away by toll road. So common is the trip from Monterrey to McAllen that a new Spanish verb was coined: macalenear, literally ‘to do McAllen.’
