I´ve written extensively on how Mexico is a safe place to retire. The country was ranked number 3 by the Living Annual Global Retirement Index. Recently comedian and talk show host John Oliver dedicated an episode of Last Week Tonight to the subject of retirement. The host even provoked an article by Forbes magazine, which examined his comments such as ¨You won’t get to retire on stockpiled Beanie Babies. You can if you save diligently in your retirement plan, but you often have to get past conflicted financial advisers and your employer’s retirement plan to get there.¨
Oliver has recently attacked typical retirement advice and products being sold by big financial companies, and is critical of what he views as terrible retirement advice being given. ¨Most managed funds don’t do better than the market. This is not a secret,†Oliver added that ¨the entire financial industry is a potential minefield.†He also stated that “fees can really add up, too. Think of fees like termites,â€
The International Living Annual Global Retirement Index lists countries worldwide where retirees can live better for less around the world. It also measures the level of significant retiree benefits and discounts, including continued savings on things like transportation, entertainment, social services, visa costs and healthcare.
Retiring abroad is easier than ever before and some of the world’s most popular retirement destinations offer much more for the same amount of money than comparable cities in the U.S., Canada and Europe. There are almost one million U.S. citizens  living in Mexico, so obtaining residency is not a problem. For those who prefer a snowbird type of relationship with Mexico or are awaiting a visitor permit allows you to spend six months in Mexico at a time.
If you are a potential retiree you should consider joining us for one of Top Mexico’s Live it Tours. It offers the opportunity to see various properties and neighborhoods in the Riviera Maya. To book yourself in for the next tour and see the Top Mexico Real Estate properties we have listed in the Riviera Maya please contact one of our Top Mexico Buyers’ Representatives. You can check out popular retirement areas in the Riviera Maya like Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.
Retirement is a real possibility for those who choose to invest in property in Mexico. With lower prices on some many houses and condominiums and a much lower cost of living that makes your dollar go further, a retirement life here south of the border can be something to look forward to rather than dread. As Oliver said “If you don’t play close attention, this doesn’t have to get away from you.¨
