Celebrate the Equinox in Mexico – Joyfully Welcoming the Spring

The spring equinox is a beautiful time anywhere, but especially in Mexico, there are some places that excel in charm, beauty and spiritual strength.

On Wednesday, Tom posted about the spring Equinox at Chichen Itza, and yesterday about welcoming the spring in Playa del Carmen.

The following are a few more of the key places where people gathered for spiritual enlightenment, beauty or simply for the pleasure of seeing the sunrise on the first day of spring:

Pyramid of the Sun, Teotihuacan – an Aztec city just north of Mexico City

Want to See Mexico’s Wildlife Upclose? Go to Xcaret (Part 3)

Places to see for Mexico retirementMexico is a country rich in wildlife and nature.  As with so many other attractive aspects of things to see and experience in Mexico, Xcaret offers  a very good taste of the kinds of colorful birds, wild cats and nature you will find – at least for the Yucatan Peninsula.

For the intro to Xcaret, click here.  For a gallery of photos on the architecture and art, click here.

Today I’m going to share  a series of pictures on wildlife and nature. I’m trying something new and sharing it as a slideshow.  It will automatically go through all the pictures, but if you move the cursor over the pictures, you will see buttons for back, forward and pause so you can have some control.

In the slide show, you will see jaguars, panthers, flamingos, birds of various kinds, bird eggs, and another animal called a tapir, I believe.  There are also some nature shots:

The Mysterious Underground World – Dos Ojos Cenote, Playa del Carmen

Living in Mexico can be hot sometimes! But is there anything better to do on a hot day than relax in a fresh, crystal clear naturally made pool of water? Well, around here we call them cenotes. There are so many of them, but my favorite is Dos Ojos (2 eyes), named for its 2 large swimming holes. These cenotes are linked to caverns that run up and down the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Dos Ojos is about 10-15 minutes north of Tulum, almost opposite Xel-ha, another great place to relax on asunny day.

It’s entrance is located right on the highway. From there you need to travel inland about 2km. If you are driving yourself, you just pay the entrance fee and continue on to the cenote. If you don’t have transport, there are tours available. After arriving at the entrance you can talk with the happy staff and they can offer you guides, snorkeling tours or diving tours. You can also rent equipment from them if you don’t have any of your own.

On the drive inland towards the Cenote, you can catch a glimpse of nature at its best. There are some animals about, and you can always see birds flying around.

The Cenote itself is quite large even though it might not look that way. It’s a very popular site for diving and snorkeling. There are some hammocks around that you can relax in. I would suggest taking a picnic lunch, but just remember not to lave any garbage lying around. There are some stores to buy cold drinks and snacks or a special souvenir. All in all it’s a great day to be had buy the whole family.

Holistika Tulum – Video: The Ideal Place to Reconnect with Yourself!

Yesterday, Tom posted about the best places in Playa del Carmen to watch the Superbowl. Just to show how varied life is in the Riviera Maya, today I’m going to share a video about something very different – the self-discovery and connection with nature offered by Tulum’s ecological culture.

In this video, Lorena, one of the architects for a new natural hotel and spa in Tulum called Holistika, talks about the concept behind this beautiful spa set in the middle of the jungle and integrated into nature.

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

Spirituality in Mexico runs deep and can be found in the rich traditions of Catholicism, in the ancient (and still living) rituals of the Aztec people, or in yoga or Buddhism, to name only a few examples. The beauty of the country’s nature and the magic of wonderful places offer the ideal setting for this kind of self-discovery.

(As a side note, Holistika also offers lots for sale where people can have their ecological dream home built to enjoy this lifestyle as every life!)
