While Americans and Canadians thinking of retiring in Mexico may be surprised by the widespread mistrust of tap water throughout Mexico, a recent report has indicated that the water situation is not as bad as many think, and the supply of clean, reliably purified water is available for retirees living in Mexico's key retirement destinations such as Ixtapa on the Pacific Coast, is excellent.

When buyers acquire their Ixtapa real estate, they notice the up to date infrastructure and well designed community, and perhaps wonder why it is that residents don't have potable tap water. The fact is that 85% of water from municipal systems is perfectly safe; residents who have lived in larger cities, such as Mexico City where the water supply system has received rough treatment from the city's geographical situation, have gotten used avoiding drinking tap water because of real concerns in those cities.

Multinational beverage corporations (Coca Cola, Pepsi, Danone are the main ones) have capitalized on this distrust and done an amazing job of promoting their bottled-water products; and because the 15% of unsafe water is always reliably reported, it's probably a good idea to go with these products of more established reputation for delivering clean water.

But among all this concern and negative talk, there's a very positive side; besides a great job of marketing, these big companies have also done a great job of delivering. Their products are cheap – a 20 liter jug of water (a bit over 5 gallons) costs about $2. You can buy the jugs in the grocery store, or, alternatively, in some communities, the companies send trucks around, and the drivers will deliver the jugs right to your doorstep, at no extra cost. Variety stores also always have a supply of these large jugs. If you are concerned about the environment, these jugs are collected, sterilized and refilled.

Living in Ixtapa includes many benefits for retirees, and the bottled-water issue just becomes a part of day to day life; it has become so convenient, there really is no complication behind it.
