Tulum is on its way to being named a "Magic Town," a official distinction in Mexico which is given to villages and towns which preserve an aspect of Mexico's rich history, and offer distinct visual image and cultural activity to combine into a a very unique and attractive atmosphere for visitors. For retirees or other Americans and Canadians planning on buying Tulum real estate, this move means that all three levels of government will be investing funds into maintaining and developing the complete atmosphere of town, making it an ideal Mexico retirement community.

In early June 2010, Tulum had already proceeded about through 60% of the steps to receive very beneficial recognition. Requirements which the town has fulfilled include having a unified image, a set of regulations concerning image, construction, and businesses in main commercial areas, the commitment of all three levels of government to support the development of its town image and culture, and a tourism development program. Currently, Tulum is waiting for approval from the state congress to include Tulum among Mexico's Magic Towns, which currently number at 37.

For retirees considering Tulum real estate as an option, this status would bring significant investment into feature which make the town a pleasant place to live. Relaxing evening walks, evenings out at restaurants, welcoming family and friends to visit are all made that much more appealing in a place that offers a clean atmosphere, blending Mexican traditions with modern conveniences and services. Mexico's federal government has already invested about 150 million dollars into these villages, and in light of their success, has plans to increase this investment.

Tulum also has an international airport in plans, and with the accompanying influx of tourists will come a wide range of new services. With the development plan that is required by the Magic Town status, the infrastructure required to bring these new services will be completed in a way which preserves the unique atmosphere that Tulum provides.
