Typically, when we think of Mexico retirement, we think of life on the beachfront. However, there is another side to life in Mexico – this is the culturally rich colonial cities with their old cathedrals and beautiful architecture defining a very romantic aspect of day to day life. One city in particular, Merida, on the northern shore of the Yucatan peninsula combines the best of these two worlds with many modern services and conveniences in a way ideal for retirement.

As a colonial city, Merida actually dates back to pre-hispanic times as a main center for the Mayan civilization. The current city dates to slightly after the conquest, and offers the visual pleasure of cathedrals dating back hundreds of years, elaborately decorated public buildings and colorfully painted homes with narrow, straight roads running through the old city.

Yucatan homes in Merida include a very wide range of possibilities. There are traditional mansions dating back over a hundred years, offering a luxury lifestyle only a few blocks away from the city's cultural gems, just a bit down the road, traditional Mexican style homes. Prices can range from under $60,000 for a fixer-upper to close to $2 million. Quaint homes in quiet communities, only a short drive from the historic center, or golf course homes in upscale neighborhoods are also available.

Regardless of which home a buyer chooses, they will be enjoying life in a city with a lifestyle in many ways defined by its visual richness. Romance is offered to couples taking evening strolls through the the old city, and the sound of Mariachi and other traditional music in the air. Culture exists everywhere, with museums, galleries, theaters and much more. In any case, one aspect which will define retirement in Merida is relaxation.

Added to this charm of culture and tradition are many modern conveniences. Merida offers new shopping centers, large-screen movie theaters (with movies in English), excellent golf and top-quality hospitals.

While Merida is not directly on the beachfront, it is only 30 minutes away from a picturesque resort town called Progreso. While enjoying a life in city full of colonial charm, residents can head to the beach any sunny afternoon.

Merida is truly an excellent combination of a colonial city with a large amount of culture, modern conveniences and close access to the beachfront. Retirement here is something different.
