The Mexico real estate industry for non-Mexican buyers is one which is closely tied into the tourism industry. This is especially true in areas like the Yucatan Peninsula, where the value of Mexico properties can increase significantly with a growing number of services and higher vacation rental demand driven by a thriving tourism industry, which is becoming an almost "pan-peninsular" phenomenon, with tourists and residents alike visiting the variety of destinations, ranging from beachfront paradise, to colonial cities and ancient Mayan pyramids, to jungle adventure.

This is phenomenon is soon to be strengthened with the appearance of high-speed bullet train connecting Playa del Carmen on the western, Caribbean shore of the peninsula to Chichen Itza and Merida (a traditional colonial city) in the north/central area to other pyramid sites and the colonial city of Campeche on the east Gulf shore of the peninsula.

This train, a project driven by the state government of Yucatan, will help place Merida in a central logistical position for tourism, making it an ideal starting point to visit the ruins of Chichen Itza, now one of the Wonders of the Ancient World, as well as other pyramid sites, beachfront destinations and colonial cities. The terminal at Playa del Carmen is located at a ferry dock to Cozumel, making it easy for visitors to experience both Playa del Carmen's vibrant nightlife, and Cozumel's famous snorkeling and diving locations.

The results of this train will be beneficial for those considering buying a Yucatan home in the city of Merida; increased tourism will mean an increase of services and investment in this city, which can already boast an ideal combination of well-preserved colonial charm and modern services. The train will also allow residents to travel to other locations on the peninsula with ease and comfort, just as for visitors to the area.

The first phase of the train will link Merida to Chichen Itza, strengthening Merida's role as a "gateway" to this popular pyramid site. One source reported that the speed of the train would be about 130 km/h which is about 80 miles; while this is not a very high speed, the direct routes, and stops only at the sites to be visited will make for faster travel times.
