When you think of owning a Mexico homes in Yucatan, what do you imagine? Yucatan Real Estate includes many possibilities - perhaps a colonial style home near Merida's charming old city center, perhaps a modern home in a new development near a golf course, maybe a luxury beachfront villa, or a beautiful old hacienda in the countryside, ready for restoration. But what about a 200 acre plot on the site of some of the world's most famous ancient ruins?

In late March, this is precisely the transaction that took place; the 200 acres which include about 125 of the archaeological site of Chichen Itza were bought by the government of the State of Yucatan, for almost $20,000,000 US from the businessman Hans Juergen Thies Barbachano, grandson of the original owner, Fernando Barbachano Gomez-Rul. Chichen Itza has been World Heritage of Humanity site for culture since 1988, and is currently considered one of the new 7 wonders of the world.

While the government of Yucatan probably made this purchase in order to facilitate archaeological work in the area, we as real estate buyers in Yucatan can also own our own little piece of culture and heritage. Those who choose to Live in Mexico for retirement, especially in Yucatan, do so at least partly because of this fact. So, let's look at some possibilities.

One is the quaint little homes in or near Merida's colonial city center. For those who enjoy the comfort of living within walking distance to everything, (or, at the very most, a short drive) appreciate the unique atmosphere of Merida's completely restored downtown. Tree lined roads with old fashioned lamps, sidewalk benches, beautiful little parks, and buildings that still retain their original colonial charm are all a part of day to day life, which includes many pleasant little walks through these areas. This kind of home is available as low as $150,000 US, or even cheaper if you want a fixer upper.

Another option is an Hacienda, one of the estates established by the wealthier class during Mexico's colonial period. These sell for considerably more, of course, but again the price varies according to the condition; some are long term projects, others have already been restored.

Retirement in one of Yucatan's colonial gems is currently becoming one of Mexico's top choices, since the area includes all activities and services for a comfortable lifestyle, including top-of-the-line health care; in the new future, emphasis is expected to be placed on health care facilities especially focused on retirement.
