In late April, Cancun city officials created a new committee, Committee for the Local Environmental Program ("POEL" is the Spanish acronym), to oversee the city's approach to the environment and sustainability. For Cancun Real Estate this means that buyers will continue to enjoy an environment of well-preserved natural surroundings, while more and more begin to take these idea into account in their property searches.

The committee will be responsible for reviewing and suggesting adaptions to the urban plan and development plans, considering the protection and integration of the area's nature. The formation of the committee reflects and complements the already growing move in the area to take sustainability into account when developing.

This move has been seen in several new hotels in the area, some of which have been recognized and certified by green organizations for their efforts not only to protect the environment, but to respect and promote local culture.

For real estate buyers, whether searching for a new Cancun home in a development designed with sustainable ideas, or searching in general, the move on the part of Cancun to create this committee means that new infrastructure as well will also be designed and created taking sustainability into account.

As these kinds of concerns become ever more common among Americans and Canadians, the move also shows Cancun's ongoing ability to identify and address market trends in tourism, real estate and investment. Another example of this is Cancun's recent move to promote its hotels for international conferences, an ever-growing branch of tourism which brings a higher income per visitor than standard tourism – an effort which has already been seeing results in conferences such as the upcoming Cancun Climate Change Summit.

For current investors this fact about Cancun means that besides investing in an area that is continually showing more environmental responsibility, they are also investing in an area which is at the forefront of keeping its tourism based economy strong, as well as motivation for large-scale international investment.
