In Chichen Itza, I Rediscover The Ancient Mayans Each Time! Gallery #1

There are some tourist sites where you visit once, see it, and it’s done; you never need to go back.  Chichen Itza is most certainly NOT one of those places.  Since I moved to the Riviera Maya, and even before, I’ve visited numerous times.

Every time I’m left with the feeling that I should have stayed longer, looked at engravings more closely, or just admired the grandeur of the main temple. And every time I go back, I feel like I’m discovering it for the first time again – it’s a truly awe-inspiring place.

A few days ago we went back again.  Other than these brief opening comments, I just want to share some of the pictures I took. Today I’ll share some of the main temple or “Castillo,” and tomorrow I’ll share some pictures of various other buildings and features.

To start off, here are a couple of shots from the car:

And the majestic “Castillo:”

The sacred cenote nearby, at the end of the Sacbe, “White Road”:

Be sure to check in tomorrow for more pictures!

Wouldn’t You Love to Swim with Dolphins? I Sure Did!

If you have never taken the opportunity to experience swimming with these amazing creatures, I really recommend it! A couple of weeks ago, we decided to try it out, again.

This time, we found a swim with dolphins tour that would take us by ferry to Isla Mujeres, a little island near Cancun. We could spend the whole day there. It was fantastic. So for the price of swimming with the dolphins, we got a ferry ride to the island and back, we got to swim with the dolphins and spend lots of time with them, getting our photos taken and so forth. We also got to snorkel with manta rays, see some sharks in their natural environment and relax in the pool that overlooks the dolphin area.

(This is not me, by the way!)

But wait, there’s more! It was also all inclusive, so we got lunch and drinks. Also, we could go explore the island if we wanted to. It really was an amazing experience. The whole day was like a dream. The staff were incredible, the food was great and the dolphins, well, words can not describe them.

It was a day I will never forget, and hopefully a day I can repeat again and again. That’s the beauty of living in such a naturally beautiful place. So many opportunities just waiting to be had.

Would You Like to Travel by Train in Mexico?

Travel in MexicoIn recent weeks, there’s been a lot of talk about the new passenger train being planned for the Yucatan Peninsula, which would connect Playa del Carmen to Chichen Itza, Merida and later on to Campeche. I love traveling by train – relaxing, enjoying some food or drinks, watching the scenery or maybe just reading a book. There’s something magical about trains – at least for me, and I would love to see a train running here.

I’ve made another little survey to find out what you think about traveling by train – and the idea of traveling by train in Mexico.

Holistika Tulum – Video: The Ideal Place to Reconnect with Yourself!

Yesterday, Tom posted about the best places in Playa del Carmen to watch the Superbowl. Just to show how varied life is in the Riviera Maya, today I’m going to share a video about something very different – the self-discovery and connection with nature offered by Tulum’s ecological culture.

In this video, Lorena, one of the architects for a new natural hotel and spa in Tulum called Holistika, talks about the concept behind this beautiful spa set in the middle of the jungle and integrated into nature.

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

Spirituality in Mexico runs deep and can be found in the rich traditions of Catholicism, in the ancient (and still living) rituals of the Aztec people, or in yoga or Buddhism, to name only a few examples. The beauty of the country’s nature and the magic of wonderful places offer the ideal setting for this kind of self-discovery.

(As a side note, Holistika also offers lots for sale where people can have their ecological dream home built to enjoy this lifestyle as every life!)

Where Would You Rather Be – White Snow or White Beach? – Video

Snow is most certainly something beautiful to look at!  But, after that, it becomes a little less attractive – trekking through cold, knee-deep snow, or – even worse – shoveling it off the driveway.

Wouldn’t you rather be enjoying the white sand of warm beach on the Caribbean?  I sure would!  Take a look at this video.  The first part is probably just all too familiar, but the second part could be part of your day to day life!

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

For me, when it comes to snow, I’ll be happy to look at pictures and videos online, safely away from any shovels or snow-blowers, wearing shorts and sandals, relaxing on the beach!

Do You Want to See More of Coco Beach? Community Gallery, Part II

A couple of weeks ago, Tom shared an introduction of Coco Beach, with a description of this beautiful and trendy new beachfront neighborhood just at the north end of downtown; of course, Coco Beach itself – i.e. the actual beachfront – is simply gorgeous!

This is one of my favorite communities in town – trendy and modern, yet relaxing and picturesque, happening and “hip,” yet quiet and residential.  Fifth Avenue and Playa’s main shopping and dining a very close – you can easily walk. It’s simply a place I love to go for a stroll, enjoy a coffee or a nice lunch, head to the beach and relax! Today I want to share another set of pictures.

Splendid Beach Views! Wouldn’t You Like to Be in Playa?

I’ve heard that in Ontario, they’re getting cold rain on top of a couple of feet of snow – lots of slush, and mucky water …

Art, Crafts and Local Shops on Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue – In Pictures

Part of the charm of Playa del Carmen’s Fifth Avenue is that alongside of international restaurants, upscale boutiques and trendy bars, there are local artists working on site, handmade crafts from local artisans and small shops selling a variety of items.

The following are some pictures I took a while back.  Enjoy!

The first is a picture of an artist, working with spray paint! It’s nice to be able to buy art directly from the artist, and know that the cash is supporting local creativity:

This shop sells hand-made local artisan blankets, scarves and panchos:

Living in Mexico Tip – Should I Eat in the Local Restaurants?

Living in Playa del Carmen
When it comes to food and traveling, the rule for tourists is pretty clear; stick to the restaurants in the resort/hotel or the bigger, nicer restaurants in the tourist areas.  No need to spoil the vacation because you got sick from eating in a sketchy little restaurant.  After all, even in the nicer places, prices are still excellent compared to back home!

However, once you actually settle down and begin living in Mexico as a retiree, either full time or part time on the longer term, it’s nice to try something different, something a bit more adventurous.  Most people know that you can find nice little gems in the local restaurants with excellent food and even lower prices.

The question is: How do you know which ones are good?  How do you know you won’t get sick?

While trial and error may not be the most appealing approach (and could leave you shut in your home when you should be out enjoying the beach), there are tips you can follow, such as the following:Living in Playa del Carmen

    • Ask other expats. Word spreads, and most expats have their regular hang-outs that usually NOT the main tourist spots.  In most communities where there are expats, a good portion of them will be adventurous; they’ll already have been out there and discovered which places have good food. Why reinvent the wheel?
    • Ask Mexicans. Once you get to know Mexican neighbors and you know their individual tastes, ask them for suggestions.  They’ll usually know a good number of local places and can even suggest less commonly known Mexican food.  Many Mexicans will even err on the side of caution when making recommendations to Americans and Canadians.
    • Look it up on the Internet.  While the smallest places won’t be online, sites like TripAdvisor or Foursquare include reports for surprisingly unknown places.  As I said, adventurers are everywhere, and these days most of them can post on the internet instantly.

Living in Playa del Carmen

  • Look at the crowd. In all likelihood, if a restaurant, cafe, bar or even taco stand is full of people every day, it’s probably safe.  If there are regular problems, word spreads quickly and people stop going.  This isn’t a guarantee, but if you’re just walking by on the street and you’re hungry for that taco, it can be one indication.

Of course, now and then a random adventure can be a fun way of being the first among the expat crowd to discover a great place for enchiladas; especially for new places that are just opening, sometimes it’s not a bad idea to give them a chance.  You might do best leaving the more adventurous undertakings for later on, once you know your community and have a better feel of how things work (or know at least basic Spanish.)

The bottom line is that you can try restaurants, cafes, etc., that are not on the main tourist strip, and do so pretty safely.
