When choosing a place to live abroad, Americans and Canadians will usually place a good deal of importance on the general cleanliness and image of the city and community they choose. While Mexico homes can be found in many very clean and safe communities, a recent contest suggests that Playa del Carmen homes fair the best.

For 2010, the prize of "Cleanest City in Mexico" was awarded to Playa del Carmen, which is less than an hour south of Cancun. The prize follows a number of intense programs to protect the city's image, keep streets and public areas clean, and protect environmental surroundings. The programs include an ongoing "recyclathon," garbage collection, street sweeping and cleaning, maintenance and cleaning of the beaches, de-silting of wells, and several others.

The fact that the programs focus both on tourism-centered areas (the beach) and public areas of the working-class population is an important point, helping to develop an overall positive lifestyle atmosphere and address social issues.

Owners of Playa del Carmen condos in the downtown area will notice the results of these efforts, with clean streets and parks, and a pleasant relationship between the large expat community and the local Mexican population. Nearby upscale gated communities are, of course, immaculate, and show the highest level of cleanliness and urban image. Even for residents of these areas, however, it is important to have this lifestyle supported by a clean and safe downtown area.

Upon receiving the award, the mayor of Playa del Carmen, Roman Quian, called the recognition the end result or the ongoing development of a culture for the care of urban image and the environment.

In addition to being clean, Playa del Carmen is also very safe. In addition to a very low crime rate, expats can enjoy comfortable walks through any part of the city; parks have public internet access, and residents can sit down and enjoy using their computers and other devices safely without having to worry about hiding the value of what they're carrying.

For all residents, the beaches are, of course, one of the most important attractions, and Playa del Carmen has made an incredible effort to keep the beach area free of garbage, keep the water clean and safe, and in general maintain the enjoy-ability of this natural wonder.

For lifestyle in a place which is warm, sunny, clean and safe, consider Playa del Carmen.
