When we discovered La Escondida eco-friendly boutique community, we quickly realized that the name is very significant.  “La Escondida” is Spanish for “Hidden.”  It is, in fact hidden in a way that will appeal to many Americans and Canadians who wish to live in Playa del Carmen.

When people consider Playa del Carmen, the places they always consider first are downtown, Playacar or the nice gated communities north of town.  And these are excellent areas to consider that I can highly recommend.  Yet, this means that a large new master development just at the south end of downtown is still remaining “hidden” and out of sight.

This master development is called La Joya.  It offers a new concept within Playa del Carmen of a larger development with a practical and visually appealing lay-out.  There are beautiful boulevards and a large park and green area in the middle which will be home to a sports complex.

On the north-east corner of this master development – the corner closest to the main access and a large, nice new mall directly next door, is La Escondida.  La Esconida is “hidden” in sense, yet it is very easy to get to!

The boutique community itself is a unique concept in that it is a small, exclusive closed-gated community that is free of car traffic.  There is parking safely within the gated entrance and transportation to and from the parking by means of a golf cart service, making the community very safe to walk around in, and very quiet and relaxing as well.  This also maximizes the amount of green space and areas for the pools, club house and reception area, allowing for a very visually appealing setting.

While people coming and going from the mall may never guess that this little paradise is hidden away just around the corner, residents can easily walk to the mall, ride a bike or take advantage of the community’s transportation service.  The mall includes a supermarket, a modern movie theater (with movies in English,) OfficeMax, a food court, clothing, appliances, furniture and plenty of knickknack and specialty shops.

Only about 5 minutes away is Playa del Carmen’s best prestigious hospital.

The dining, nightlife and culture of downtown’s Fifth Avenue is always only a short drive away, as are the famous, beautiful beaches of the Riviera Maya with their soft, white sand and stunning turquoise water.

La Escondida is “hidden” away in an up-and-coming part of town.  It is out of the way, quiet and relaxing.  Yet it is so close to everything.
