On March 16, 2011, the Playa del Carmen Campus of the University of Quintina Roo was officially opened. This opening is an early part of a larger program to create diversity in the economy of Playa del Carmen, including the promotion of more universities. This, in turn, will help bring new Playa del Carmen property investment opportunities.
During the first phase the campus will be home to 240 students, a number expected to reach 800 by 2012 when the project is completed.
The new university is an early part of a plan to expand Playa del Carmen's economy. As the community continues to grow at one of the fastest rates in Latin America, the municipal and state government have created a plan to introduce new economic activity that is conducive to co-existing with the area's already strong and growing tourism industry. Among these are agriculture and education. A growing university community is considered to be ideal for the city's image and to bring new economic activity.
For real estate buyers, the growth connected with this new economic activity means new opportunities for investment. As the city grows, there will be a growing number of suitable communities to choose from for buyers looking for Playa del Carmen homes for sale. A growing number of upscale gated communities are already appearing on the side of the highway away from the beachfront, near the area which will be the area to see the growth in universities as well.
The new growth also points to excellent opportunities to invest in Playa del Carmen land for sale. As the city continues to grow and expand at a healthy rate, land in up-and-coming areas has been seeing healthy value appreciation. Gated land developments also offer excellent options for those interested in having a custom designed home built.
Because of the layout and design of the city, access to the beachfront from the newest developments furthest back from the beach is still only a 10-15 minute drive, making real estate options attractive for American, Canadian and European buyers.
The new campus of the University of Quintana Roo (Quintana Roo is the state which includes Cancun and Playa del Carmen among other major tourist destinations) currently has three degrees, Engineering Management, BA in Government and Public Management and Hospitality Management.
