When people buy Mexico real estate, they are definitely buying a warm-weather lifestyle with a low cost of living; but almost as importantly, they are starting a life connected with a rich, centuries-old culture.   This fact was recently reflected for Playa del Carmen real estate buyers as the ancient custom of the Sacred Mayan Journey - a boat crossing to the island of Cozumel - was honored in its annual celebration in early May, 2011.

As part of preserving the culture and traditions of the region, more than 60 artists, students of different workshops of the Municipal Department of Culture, prepared the representation of the ancient Mayan ritual dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel for the Fifth Annual Sacred Mayan Journey, which will be leaving from the cultural theme park just south of Playa del Carmen, Xcaret.

The crossing and related ritual will be held from May 19 to 21.   Both participants and spectators included everyone - children and elderly people, locals and foreigners.

Events such as this one offer a long-term form of cultural identification at various levels of the area's lifestyle inhabitants of both Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, offering a diversity of attractions, such as anthropology, music, dance, ritual, purification and commerce.   Each of the 5 years has seen a greater number of people involved, both as participants and as spectators.

Events such as this one offer American and Canadian real estate buyers a connection to the area's lifestyle on several levels.   One is that it is an event that crosses social boundaries, including residents of all backgrounds, as well as visitors.   Another is that it offers a real, active means of connecting to the area's ancient culture and living Mayan traditions.   The Mayan people pride themselves in being a welcoming people, opening their customs to others - both to other Mexicans and to foreigners visiting and living in the area.

Events such as this one are not isolated in the area.   The culture-focused theme park, Xcaret, actually offers a rich presentation of many traditions both from the area and from throughout Mexico on a regular basis.   Residents will find visits intriguing and entertaining as much as tourists.
