What do you imagine when you hear Yucatan real estate? Cancun condos for sale on the beachfront? Or perhaps old colonial homes in Merida?  What about the relaxing island isolation of Cozumel real estate?  Whatever your first image is, within a small area, the Yucatan Peninsula offers an excellent variety of locations, each with a distinct lifestyle.  Let’s take a look at the three options mentioned here.

Cancun’s Beachfront Hotel Zone

Perhaps the best known real estate option on the Yucatan Peninsula is Cancun’s beachfront in the famous hotel zone.  Thousands of Americans and Canadians arrive as tourists every year, and it has emerged as the most visited vacation spot by Americans outside of the U.S.  For people who travel around the Peninsula, Cancun often serves as a home base.

Cancun’s fame is well deserved.  The beaches are wide with soft, white sand.  The warm water has beautiful turquoise color seldom to be found.  The upscale hotels and resorts along the beachfront area offer luxury living at an accessible price, as do the condo complexes; these often include beachfront pools, gyms, lounge areas and other amenities.  Nearby there are malls, movie theaters, golf courses and excellent restaurants serving a variety of Mexican and international foods.

Merida’s Historic Center

Swinging the pendulum to the opposite extreme, we find the city of Merida about 3 hours away from Cancun.  The city is about 30 minutes back from the beach; it has the country’s second largest colonial city center and without a doubt one of the most beautiful.  Residents can walk everywhere – to the local market, museums, cafes, an English library or beautiful city parks.

More and more expats have begun to take interest in buying an old colonial home to enjoy this lifestyle directly.  A popular choice are the renovation projects in which buyers convert a somewhat neglected home into a colonial dream which includes all modern conveniences.

The Island of Cozumel

The island of Cozumel is defined by nature.  There is a small city at the ferry and cruise dock and an international airport; the rest of the island is covered with lush green jungle with some hidden Mayan pyramids here and there.  Whether living in town, out along the beachfront or back in the jungle, you will find complete relaxation on this beautiful island without ever being far from the conveniences of Playa del Carmen and Cancun back on the main land.

These three examples are but a taste of the variety the Yucatan Peninsula offers.  Those interested in the area will do well to contact an agent familiar with a variety of options and describe their dream home and location, so they can help identify the best of the many opportunities.
