Here’s a List of Activities You Can Do in Tulum

There’s no question about it. When someone hears the word Tulum, they naturally paint a picture of this beautiful beach in their head. They then think of celebrities, hippies, posh cabanas, little boutique hotels and stores and much, much more. However, there are many activities you can do that are fun and you probably wouldn’t think of off the bat. Oh, the Mayan Ruins are something you must see when you are visiting Tulum… but you obviously knew that.

So, if you’re wondering what activities you can do in Tulum, here are a few ideas to have a wonderful day in this beautiful town:

 

Rent a bike in Tulum

We were thinking somewhere along the lines of biking around Tulum; seeing everything there is to see and going at your own pace. You can rent a bike daily for approximately $80 pesos, which is around $5.00 USD per day. If you rent on a weekly basis, you will get a better price.

Bike ride through Coba

Nonetheless, if you wanted to go for a bike ride through the jungle, we would point you in the direction of “Coba.” Coba is an archeological site that was open for public use in 1973. Coba has many different ruins to explore around. However, they do have one incredible ruin that you are actually able to climb to the very top to see the amazing views of the jungle above the trees. When you first arrive to Coba, you have the option of renting a bike or choosing to walk. We of course recommend to rent a bike, and make your time at Coba much more adventurous and fun. At the end of the day, you are doing enough walking if you choose to walk up the ruin, so biking to the ruin could be a good choice.

Activities you can do in Tulum

Yoga

One thing that you will notice in Tulum are the Yogi’s (people who like doing yoga.) Therefore, there are a lot of yoga studios. If you have never tried Yoga before, Tulum is the place to do so. With cheap prices, and being located right on the Caribbean Sea, it will be the best experience of your life. Classes usually start around 8:30 am or evening classes around 5:00 pm.

Cenotes

What is a cenote you may be wondering?

A cenote is a sinkhole that has water underneath the hole and we now use it for swimming purposes. A cenote formed when the limestone bedrock collapsed. What an innovative idea right? Well let me tell you, the Riviera Maya is filled with all these magnificent sinkholes that make the perfect snorkeling spot.

Make sure you research ahead of time which sink hole you would like to visit and be prepared with a towel, biodegradable sunscreen, so we don’t harm the fish, and your snorkeling gear. If you have an underwater camera, you should definitely bring that along too! There are people who come to the cenotes for diving purposes. If you like diving, this would be the perfect place to do so. If you have never done it before and would like to try, the shallower waters make it less frightening. Three great cenotes you can visit are:

  1. Gran Cenote
  2. Cenote Dos Ojos
  3. Cenote Calavera

Getting Around Tulum Like a Local

You stumbled upon the right blog post at the right time, because we are about to tell you how to get around Tulum like a Mexican!

When you arrive to a new place it’s always a struggle trying to get from point A to point B. Especially when you throw in the language barrier; that just adds a whole other whack of stress.

It doesn’t have to be like that… When you do the appropriate research before your trip, you would be surprised as to how easy it is to get around. A little research can make it seem like you’ve been to the place before. The easiest thing is to look on different forums and see what other travellers did when they traveled to that destination.

Getting around Tulum

Modes of transportation to get around Tulum:

Bus: There are a couple local buses and ADO buses that take you around Tulum and back and forth from Playa del Carmen and Cancun. You can find the ADO bus schedule here.

Bike: There are many different bike shops and hotels that rent out bikes for the day/week/month located all around Tulum. We would recommend this way of transportation. This way you get your exercise and get to where you need to be. Also, what better way to take advantage of the Caribbean heat than by using a bike

Getting around Tulum

Two feet: We just had to include this. Walking is a good way to get around Tulum. Depending on where you stay, you can walk to most places. If you stay somewhere on Tulum beach or close by, then you can definitely walk to and from the places you need to be. Everything here is in walking distance. From restaurants to supermarkets to boutique stores. You name it you can walk to it.

Colectivo: The colectivo is a large white van that takes you around the town and to Akumal, Playa and Cancun. You just have to be prepared and know where the colectivo stops are and stand there. This is an easy form of transportation. If you do not want to wait for a bus, the colectivo comes every few minutes. Don’t be alarmed to see a bunch of locals packed in tight in one of these vans. It just makes it that much more comfortable.

Now that you know how easy is to get around Tulum, go visit all the beautiful places this town has to offer. Moving around Tulum has never been this easy!

 

 

The Mayan Ruins in Tulum

If you are visiting Tulum for the first time, the Mayan Ruins are a place you must check out. The ruins are located 1.5 hours away from Cancun International Airport, and approximately 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen; right in the middle of Tulum on the beach. The entrance fee into the ruins is $70 pesos or around $4.00 USD per person.

The Ruins are open everyday from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. The last entrance of the day being is at 4:30 pm. We recommend arriving earlier than 4:30 pm because there is a lot of ruins to see and learn about. Some people spend hours upon hours looking around and learning about the Mayan history. It is interesting to visit because it was the only Mayan walled city built on the coast.

The Mayan Ruins in Tulum overlook that picturesque view of the turquoise water and white sandy beach. We are sure you have seen it before on the Internet. You can also swim at this beach for free if you would like to. Just bring your swimsuit and a towel for afterwards. You will want to see this beach on a calm day to experience the different tones of blue and to capture that picture that is circling the Internet.

Don’t forget to bring your camera and something to keep the sun beating down on you – like a sunhat. There is not much shade when you are walking around the ruins, so it is always good to come prepared. Packing a water bottle to stay hydrated is a smart idea too!

This place is truly magical, and the history is unbelievable

Knowing that Mayans used to live in this ‘city’ will completely amaze you. We also recommend hiring a guide to explain to you everything you would ever want to know about the ruins and the history of the Mayans. These guides are well educated and will be able to answer you questions. You can hire a guide at the entrance of the ruins at a negotiable price, depending on the season and the demand. If you do not want to hire a guide, there are boards with useful information you can read all along the ruins.

In regards to staying close to the Mayan Ruins, there are many beautiful boutique hotels that are walking distance to the ruins. They are located along the south beach of Tulum. Booking ahead of time will secure you a preferable place. Tulum does get busy; so don’t wait till the last minute. Although there is always room for everyone, it will just take some time to find a place.

Get ready to be in total awe of the Mayan culture and all the uniqueness that Tulum has to offer. There is never a bad day to visit Tulum, so whenever you decide to go, spend as much time as you need.

Why You Should Visit Sian Ka’an in Tulum

Besides the glorious beaches and the world renowned archaeological site, Tulum has yet another attraction you should visit: the astonishing Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an, a magical place that you must visit if you’re in the Riviera Maya. If you’re interested in eco-tourism, you consider yourself a conscious traveler and you care about the environment, then visiting Sian Ka’an is for you.

This Biosphere is one of the many natural beauties that our planet has for us to enjoy; here you will find thousands of species of flora and fauna, both terrestrial and marine, some of which are unique of this environment. Sian Ka’an is home of thousands of animals that found comfort and easily have fitted in this magnificent place.

It’s important to highlight the fact that Sian Ka’an was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 by the UNESCO. This title is only given to sites with highly natural or cultural value for the general heritage for the humanity. For this, and many others reasons, this is one of the most protected areas in the Mexican Caribbean. Sian Ka’an Biosphere covers 10% of the State of Quintana Roo, with a total size of 150,000 hectares.

Also, Sian Ka’an is part of the program “Man and Biosphere” (MAB), this Project is dedicated to improve the relation between people and their environment.

If you’re into nature and you like to be surrounded by its beauty, then the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka’an is the perfect place for you. Enjoy a peaceful getaway and go camping while you coexist with nature. There are different activities available, like taking a boat ride to discover the amazing crystal-clear waters. If you like snorkeling, book a tour to the reef for an amazing adventure. It’s said that the coral reef is made out of 84 different species of coral… I bet you want to see that yourself! To finish an amazing journey, sit and relax in one of the few boutique hotels or camping sites to admire the sunset or gaze at the starry night; the perfect way to end the day!

Some recommendations

  • The best way to get to the reserve is by car or motorbike. Public transportation is scarce, and finding a taxi to go back to Tulum can be a challenge, so don’t risk getting stranded there.
  • Plan ahead and carry everything that you will need to make your trip prosperous. Include a mosquito repellent, enough water, food and snacks, and of course, a camera so you can keep all the memories from this fantastic paradise… and it’s even better if you have a waterproof camera!
  • Be conscious and respect the environment. The unique and incomparable biodiversity found here must be kept clean and every visitor must respect the environment. If coming here is in your plans, help us to conserve this World Heritage site!
  • Be careful. Even when the road has a good share of traffic, the beaches at the reserve are almost empty. Swim carefully and avoid risks; if you find yourself in trouble, finding help can take some time.
  • Some areas of the lagoon are known for being home of crocodiles. If you book a tour through the lagoon, make sure to double check with your guide if it’s safe to swim before jumping out of the boat!

Living in Mexico, Your lifesavers in the Riviera Maya!

Living in Mexico is an amazing opportunity for retirees, since a modest pension in your country of origin can stretch much more if you decide to move south of the border. As the dollar keeps strong against the peso, more and more people are looking to settle and enjoy retirement in this beautiful country.

There are over a million North American retirees living in Mexico full time, and an estimated 50,000 snowbirds that spend part of the year in the country. These numbers keep rising, as the pension system is failing and health insurance prices skyrocket.

The Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen are popular destinations for retirees from all over the world. Some of the reasons that make it such a popular destination are the closeness to North America and the available direct flights to Cancun from almost every main airport.

Once that you have settled in your new life, there are a couple of things that can make your life much easier. Keep in mind that transitioning to your new life is always to have challenges, but a positive attitude and a good sense of humor is the best tool to deal with them.

1.  Get your INAPAM card

If you are a permanent resident in Mexico, you can get your INAPAM Card and get discounts in services, property taxes, museums and cultural events. Your INAPAM card also will allow you to get discounts on buses and airlines tickets; just keep in mind that the number of discounted tickets is limited, so it is important to buy them in advance.

To get your INAPAM Card as a foreigner you will need to present:

  • Either your Migratory Form (FM2, FM3), Carta de Naturalización, Temporary Resident Permit or your passport to verify your identity and age.
  • A bill not older than three months of water, electricity or landline (TELMEX, AXTEL, TELNOR, IZZI, ETC) with your name and Mexican address.
  • 2 “Infantil” size photos.

2. Enjoy your local status

Being a local has its perks, most attractions and archeological sites have special prices for locals. It is important to have a photo ID such as your driver license or Migratory Card. If you are resident of Playa del Carmen, there are special discounts at local beach clubs such as Lido, Senzi or Piola; ask for your local discount!

3. Meet your crowd

Living as an expat is much more doable if you make friends, not only you get a support system but also benefit from their experience living in Mexico. There are many activities that can allow you to meet new friends: The Rotary Club, helping in Animal associations such as Coco’s Cat Rescue, joining local Thanksgiving dinners, etc.

Tulum Wins More Accolades for Its World Class Beach

The whole of the Riviera Maya has been receiving accolades all year round, and the city of Tulum is no exception, having picked up some of its own in 2016. We recently reported on how TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site, had named Tulum as one of its top destinations on the rise. Now one of its beaches is making itself known on the website, with Playa Paraiso getting some much deserved respect.

Paraiso (Spanish for Paradise) has great location, just north of the Tulum ruins.

It has its own boutique hotel and an excellent beach club that has sun beds, umbrellas, lounge chairs, tables and palm trees for grabbing some shade. T

here is a cost for the use their beds and chairs, but it is certainly possible to negotiate for a discount if you are up for the challenge.

The beach opens at 8am and closes at 11pm, with a restaurant on-site that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Tulum is located 80 miles south of Cancun, with Playa del Carmen to the north and the Sian-Ka’an Biosphere Reserve- a natural biosphere reserve that is home to over 300 types of birds and 100 mammal species- to the south.

It was once a walled city, one of the last to be built by the Mayans, and its’ archaeological sites are well preserved. The main archeological site of Tulum is built on a cliff that overlooks the Caribbean Ocean.

Tulum is a small eco-friendly town that epitomizes the term bohemian. It draws many travelers who seek out its hippie, low tech lifestyle, and it’s no wonder that TripAdvisor would be impressed by its stunning blue waters and cool white sand.

Top 25 Beaches in the Riviera Maya: A Day at Tulum North Beach

Meet our second favorite beach in the Riviera Maya, Tulum North. If you are familiar with the Tulum area, you know there is a lot to love: wavy turquoise beaches with powder white sand, a peaceful vibe and so many other things that lead you to relaxation.

But if you want to explore another side of Tulum, this beach will take your breath away. Nested along a natural preserve, Tulum north keeps the raw beauty of the coast with large coconut trees, sand banks and local plants giving it a more secluded and natural feeling. Another perk of this area is the amazing view, from the coast of the water you can clearly see the shore and the Tulum archeological site.

Tulum North Beach: Getting There

Getting to Tulum North is easy, there is a paved road that can take you to the entrance of this favorite beach.

If you are coming from Cancun, take the 307 federal highway in direction of Tulum. Once you get to the town, turn left at the first traffic light (the one across the San Francisco grocery store). Take that road towards the beach and when the road comes to the end turn left, there is going to be some hotels and restaurants but also some signs that say “Acceso Libre a la Playa”.

Tulum North Beach: Things To Do

Chilling and sunbathing seem to be the favorite activity for the visitors of Tulum North beach, however the wavy nature of the beaches makes them perfect for bodyboarding and board paddle as well as windsurfing or surfboarding.

There are also plenty of local fishermen offering fishing trips and tours around the coast if you want to do something different. Additionally, there are many reef areas that are great for snorkeling, make sure to bring your snorkel gear with you or ask around for a snorkel tour.

Tulum North Beach: Mingle With the locals

One of our favorite spots at Tulum North Beach is “Santa Fe”, a free access beach that has a small restaurant with delicious fresh food and amazing burgers and fries. There is also a camping area, bathrooms and showers available as well as rental of lounge chairs in front of the beach.
