We often talk about heavenly food, drinks that make you fly, or even a restaurant that makes you feel like you are in heaven. Well, now you can actually taste, drink and live breakfast, lunch or dinner in the sky! For years, Dinner in the Sky has gone around the world taking people to a very high experience. Based in Belgium, this novelty restaurant (namely one of the top 10 restaurants in the world, according to Forbes), has stablished in cities around the world bringing people closer to the heavens.

Although it is not new in Mexico, it is the first time it establishes itself in the Riviera Maya…and you’re in for a ride! If the views of our beautiful paradise with your feet on the ground so breathtaking, you can only imagine what they’re like 50 meters up in the air. In their original website, they talk about giving guests a one of a kind experience with total safety and exclusivity. Hosted by Events in the Sky, this event can be hosted anywhere, from beaches, to golf courses, to the middle of the street.

Offering breakfast, lunch, dinner, or cocktails, Dinner in the Sky offers space for 22 people at a time. Part of the ritual is arriving early, getting a safety instruction talk, and then accommodating everyone around the table that will then be lifted into the sky 50 meters by a crane.

April 2015 marks the date of when Dinner in the Sky will officially open in the Riviera Maya, so start saving up because, yes, their packages are costly, but all for a good reason. The safety and technology systems, the staff, the crane, and the delicious food and astonishing view are all worth every penny you will invest.

Menu and Prices

As mentioned above, you can choose between breakfast, lunch, dinner or cocktails – you can also reserve the whole table for a private event where you can choose your menu and time of your event.

Price: $1,800 mxn per person

Length: 1 hour

Menu: Grilled apple with honey and cinnamon; rested mass bread filled with grilled mushrooms, and gratin, baked eggs with dill; banana pancake with three milks sauce; bread, juice, hot chocolate and coffee.

Lunch and Dinner

Price: $2,500 mxn

Length: 1 hour

Menu: Chicharrón cream with pumpkin seeds; carbonara tagliatelle over a filet medallion with Peperonata; cocoa brownies with macadamia and mint; all food accompanied by red and white wine.

Cocktail

Price: $1,800 mxn

Length: 1 hour

Menu: Cherry truffle with cream cheese and caramelized sesame; marlin chalupas with chipotle and agave honey; carpesse pintxo with basil olive oil; chocolate and mezcal truffle; squash, cheese and bacon quiche; pink ceviche; asparagus wrapped with ribeye with balsamic caramel; tomato bread with chorizo and marinara sauce.

Top 25 Beaches in the Riviera Maya: A Day at Constituyentes

The Riviera Maya is filled with hundreds and hundreds of miles of beautiful, white sand beaches, turquoise waters, and relaxing sites. One of the most popular beaches in Playa del Carmen is the Constituyentes Beach, which is right in the middle of downtown, surrounded by hotels, condos, beach clubs and a lot of things to do.

Decorated with a lengthy pier – which was originally built for the ferry crossing to Cozumel – this beach is both lively and beautiful. Because it is right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, there is everything to do there, as well as you can find anything you need within walking distance.

If you are looking for a great beach to spend the day at without having to move far from the heart of the Riviera Maya, then Constituyentes Beach is a great option. Be reminded that because of its location and its popularity, you will seldom find the beach empty at any time of day. Constituyentes Beach: Getting There

If you want to visit this beach, there are several ways of reaching it, depending on where you are coming from.

Driving: If you are coming from Cancun, you need to take the highway 309 south towards Playa del Carmen. Once you arrive to Playa del Carmen, take the exit that signals Constituyentes Avenue and exit to the left. Drive straight down until you reach the beach. If you are already staying in Playa del Carmen, then all you need to do is drive to Constituyentes Avenue and straight down to the beach.

Taking a Van/Taxi: The easiest way to move around within downtown is to walk, or to take a cab. Vans are not a great option as they drive around town, making several stops, when you would only need to go a short drive away from where you are staying.

Public transportation:

Colectivos: Unless you are coming from out of Playa del Carmen, a colectivo is not the best choice; we would recommend a cab or walking. However, if you are coming in from Cancun or Tulum, you can grab a colectivo on the highway heading towards Playa del Carmen, which drops you off eight blocks away from Constituyentes Avenue. You then have the option to take a cab, walk, or take a bus.

Buses: Public buses are available throughout Playa del Carmen, so depending where you are coming from within Playa, you would need to check which bus number drops you off a block away from the beach. There are many options.

Constituyentes Beach: Things to Do

As mentioned above, this beach is right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, offering many things to do:

  • You can enjoy one of the nearby beach clubs, order food and drinks and relax all day.
  • Water activities are popular on the beach; you will be able to rent out kayaks, or rent tours for snorkeling and diving.
  • Walk two blocks to reach 5th Avenue and enjoy everything it has to offer – from coffee shops, to restaurants, to bars and shops and gallerias, everything is within reach.

Constituyentes Beach: Recommendations

  • While the Riviera Maya is popular for its reef and snorkeling spots, be reminded that the beaches within Playa del Carmen offer little to no marine life. You can take boat tours to nearby spots from these beaches, but you will not be able to see anything on your own just swimming around.
  • If you are not looking to pay for a beach club, make sure you bring your umbrellas to create shade from the sun; there is little to no shadows on this beach.
  • Do not forget to bring money, as you are in downtown and two blocks from 5th Avenue; you are sure to spend some money either eating, or shopping.

Riviera Maya Film Festival Comes to Playa del Carmen

Since 2012, the Riviera Maya has had the pleasure to host the internationally acclaimed Riviera Maya Film Festival. This year, in its 4th Edition, they will not disappoint, just like every year, bringing some of the biggest stars and names in the movie industry from around the world, but specifically, from Mexico.

Previous editions have seen Ethan Hawk, Patricia Arquette, Stephen Dorff, Maggie Gyllenhall, amongst others, walking down the red carpet. This year the festival will take place from the 23rd to the 29th of April throughout the Riviera Maya. Amongst the different venues are Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun and Puerto Morelos.

The Riviera Maya Film Festival isn’t only popular because of the great variety of movies they show, but because it has free access for everyone – even the opening and closing ceremonies! It is also a highly popular event due to its open venues and beach screenings. Who doesn’t love spending a weekday evening out on the beach watching a movie, eating popcorn and enjoying the atmosphere?

The festival is born as a means to broadcast quality film amongst the locals and visitors of the Riviera Maya. As a highly touristy destination, and lacking on the cultural aspect, the population of Quintana Roo welcomes the film festival with open arms.

As they state in their website, the festival is becoming a trending parameter thanks to its vast selection of international film, and the boost it is giving Mexican cinematography with great prices; amongst the awards, is the $300,000 mxn Kukulkan Award (approximately 20,000 USD) which is intended to be used for distribution expenses, allowing independent films to reach the audiences they want.

Other awards include the Youth Jury Kukulkan Award, which grants $100,000 mxn (over 6,000 USD); the Rivieralab/Work in Progress Award that grants $200,000 mxn (13,000 USD) which is intended to help producers and directors complete their films; and the Rivieralab/Coproduction Forum Award, granting also $200,000 mxn to support projects through pre-production.

The team behind the Riviera Maya Film Festival is a dedicated, film buff team directed by Paula Chaurand and a team of hundreds of volunteers working day and night in order to pull off the great event that locals and tourists love so much!

The Riviera Maya Film Festival gives people the opportunity to watch films that they would be unable to find in movie theaters or any other commercial film venue. The festival opens up a space for entertainment, culture and experiences that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Every year, in Cancun, they host a drive-in movie theater providing a unique experience, as well as the opening and closing gala ceremonies in the Cancun Theater. Top 25 Beaches in the Riviera Maya: A Day at Caleta Yal-Ku

The coast of the Riviera Maya is full of amazing landscapes like the Caleta Yal-Ku Cove, a Cenote that pumps fresh water in to the cove and pushes it towards the sea. There is fresh and saltwater in this cove, forming a unique and delicate ecosystem that needs to be preserved.

This eco-system can be also found in the popular park of Xel-Ha, but at Xel-Ha you have to spend much more money and you will be surrounded by thousands of visitors. On the other hand Caleta Yal-Ku, has preserved the rustic beauty of the Caribbean, with fewer visitors and at a much lower cost.

Caleta Yal-ku is a beautiful place to spend the day, amongst the many attractions that Akumal offers to its visitors this is one of the highlights.

Caleta Yal-Ku: Getting there

If you are interested in visiting Caleta Yal-Ku in Akumal, it is important to plan ahead. If you want to take advantage of everything in the area, it is best to arrive early and take time to visit different areas.

Once you get to the entrance of Akumal, the distance to get to the Yal-Ku cove is about 3 km or a little bit less than 2 miles.

Driving: If you are coming from Cancun or Playa del Carmen you need to get on the federal highway 307 southbound towards Tulum (drive 65 miles from Cancun or 22 miles from Playa del Carmen). There are plenty of signs and once you get into Akumal, go through the arches and follow the road until it ends, there will be a few signs marking the way. The Cove has a parking lot, if it is crowded you can also look for a parking spot on the road.

Taking a Van/Taxi: This might be convenient if you are not planning to do any other activities or just want to spend the day at Akumal. Once in Akumal, you can walk, rent a bike for the day or stop a taxi. Distances are short!

Public Transportation:

COLECTIVOS: If you are on a budget, Colectivos are a good way to get to Akumal. Colectivos are white mini vans that drive between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, all along the 307 federal highway. To stop them wave your hand. Tell the driver where you want to go and ask for the price to your destination. The fare from Playa to Akumal costs approximately $2 US.

BUSES: ADO offer direct buses between different destinations in the Riviera Maya. Bus stations are located in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. They also offer an airport shuttle service from the Cancun International Airport to Playa del Carmen or Tulum. If you choose to use the ADO, you can take a cab or collectivo to get to Akumal from Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

Caleta Yal-Ku: Things to do

  • The favorite thing to do in the area is snorkeling, feel free to bring your own gear or rent it once you get there!
  • Observe the limestone formations under water and the many different kinds of fish and turtles swimming in the area. The water is incredible clear!
  • Enjoy a nice meal or a cold beverage at the on-site restaurant!
  • Challenge yourself and swim all the way to the sea!
  • Observe the mangrove and the many species that live in the area.
  • Experience the halocline, a cloud like effect that can be observed when the fresh and salt water mix.

Caleta Yal-Ku: Recommendations

  • Yal-ku cove is open daily from 8am to 5:30pm and the admission fee is 150 pesos around 10 USD, there is also a local residents discount if you show your identification. The cove has showers, lockers and bathrooms, you can also rent snorkel equipment or a palapas.
  • The Yal-Ku cove has rocky areas and some roots, it is a good idea to bring your water shoes to keep your feet safe from cuts and scrapes!
  • Parking areas is limited, if you cannot find a parking space it is possible to park in the parking lot at the entrance of the town and take a cab or rent a bike to get to Caleta Yal-Ku.
  • Do not forget to bring your biodegradable suntan lotion and insect repellent, there are restrictions on the use of chemicals in the cove.

Nino’s Pizza

Nino’s is a favorite spot among the locals in Playa. Nino’s has delicious, thin crust pizza at a cheap price. There are four locations throughout Playa del Carmen but Nino’s is mainly a delivery place. They have a few plastic tables and chairs for dine in guests but the restaurant offer no real ambiance, just good pizza. Their menu items range between 50 pesos for a small cheese pizza to 120 pesos for a large 4 topping pizza. Nino’s is great for parties or to take to the beach for a picnic.

Don Chendo   

There are plenty of pizza joints in Playa del Carmen, but there’s only one Don Chendo! Don Chendo is the only place in Playa del Carmen to get Chicago style deep dish pizza. This Italian eatery offers a traditional Italian atmosphere with red and white checked table cloths, candles and twinkle lights. Don Chendo is all about home cooking, they use only quality fresh ingredients. The prices at Don Chendo’s are reasonable, the staff is so nice and the deep dish pizza is amazing.

Pizzeria 34

Pizzeria 34 has a great combination of quality ingredients at affordable prices. At Pizzeria 34 there is a nice mix of locals and visitors enjoying their hearth baked thin crust pizzas that were cooked in a wood fire oven. Pizzeria 34 has a few tables with a cute atmosphere, but they also offer to go and delivered. They have great reviews on trip adviser and the owner is really friendly. I invite you to discover this little gem and enjoy the unfogetable pizza.

Pizzeria Mama Mia

Pizzeria Mama Mia is a little store front with a couple of red and white checked tables out front, the atmosphere is nothing to write home about, but they sell delicious pizza by the slice for only around 15 pesos. This Italian pizza joint offers large, 24 sliced square pizzas starting at 165 pesos. Mama Mia offers so many different topping and flavors, there are 35 different combinations, offering something for everyone’s taste.

Top 25 Beaches in the Riviera Maya: A Day at Halfmoon Bay

If you are in the Riviera Maya, you cannot miss a day at the Halfmoon Bay, in Akumal. Experience this small town, walk around and enjoy the beauty of the beach, the Yal Ku lagoon and the cenotes in the area.

Akumal is located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, south of Cancun. An ideal destination for a relaxing day trip, partaking in water sports such as snorkeling, sport fishing or just sunbathing and enjoying a cold beverage.

Akumal in the Mayan language means “Land of turtles” and it is still one of the favorite places for these marine animals to lay their eggs. Three species can be found around Akumal regularly: the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Year-round you can find juvenile green turtles feeding in the bays and nesting along the reef.

Akumal with its protected shallow bay, secluded beaches and a nearby reefs it is one of the most peaceful places in the Riviera Maya. Everything to enjoy a wonderful day in paradise!

Halfmoon Bay: Getting there

If you are interested in visiting Akumal and everything it has to offer, there is several ways to get there:

There is so many things to do around Akumal! Here is some of our favorites:

  • Have a delicious scone and fresh coffee at the Turtle Bay Bakery, they have delicious breakfasts, coffees and pastries.
  • Walk on the bay or rent a bike and explore the town.
  • Go snorkeling and look around for turtles!
  • Visit the Yalku Lagoon: Laguna Yal-ku is surrounded amongst trees and has a nice restaurant, and perfect views. It is a perfect spot for snorkeling, as there is no waves and there is plenty of fish to see. Admission was $10 for adults and $6 for kids and equipment rentals is additional, there are lockers, an outdoor shower and changing rooms.
  • Snorkel or kayak around the bay, enjoy the white sandy beaches or just sun bathe and relax.
  • Stop at La Buena Vida for a nice lunch or dinner and enjoy the views! Lay around in their hammocks and lounge chairs, or take a dip at their pool, or if you are feeling daring you can climb the tree house where you can have drinks!

Halfmoon Bay: Recommendations

  • The beach at Half Moon Bay is mainly sandy, but there are rocky areas both inside and outside the water. Bring your water shoes to keep your feet safe!
  • Snorkeling is a great activity at Halfmoon Bay, make sure to buy or rent your equipment so that you are ready for the adventure.
  • Parking areas are limited, if possible park in the parking lot at the entrance of the town
  • Do not forget to bring your biodegradable suntan lotion and insect repellent, the turtles and fish might be affected by harsh toxics.

Mamitas Beach is the most famous beach in all of Playa del Carmen, it is a place where you go to see and be seen. Mamitas Beach has a modern vibrant atmosphere, and there are lots of beautiful people sunbathing, relaxing and enjoying the music.

Mamitas Beach has the best the Caribbean has to offer, the white fine sand and turquoise blue water, with amazing views of Cozumel located across the sea and the hottest people in Playa walking by.

This is an excellent beach to spend a relaxing day, there is several beach clubs where you can lay on a beach chair and enjoy a tropical drink while catching some sun. Because Mamitas Beach is so popular it can be somewhat crowded, especially on weekends. This is not a peaceful, tranquil beach, this is a happen place to go and have fun.

Mamitas Beach: Getting there

Getting to Mamitas beach is quite easy once you are in Playa del Carmen, it is located on street 28th and the beach.

If you are coming from the Cancun International Airport, take the Federal 307 Highway towards Playa del Carmen. Once in Playa, take the Calle 34 exit and turn right towards the beach.

Getting a parking space near Mamitas can be tricky, if you are arriving early you might be lucky and find a parking spot near the beach; otherwise try parking a few blocks from the beach.

Mamitas Beach: Things to do

Mamitas might sound like a party place, and indeed it is a really cool place to spend time surrounded by young, attractive people and enjoy the excellent service provided by the local beach clubs.

But there is more to do than party at Mamitas, while the guest are sleeping in and recovering from the previous day of parting; Mamitas it is an ideal spot for a morning walk, swimming, meditation or even some yoga. After that, stop by Kool, one of the beach clubs on Mamitas and enjoy their all you can eat breakfast buffet for only 130 pesos (about 9 USD).

The beach clubs in the area have a wide array of entertainment and the prices are quite reasonable, about 2 USD for a beer. If you open a tab for food and drinks, you might get to use one of their lounge chairs and enjoy the views, live music and entertainment.

Mamitas Beach: Things to do on a budget

If you are on a budget, there are plenty of small restaurants on 28th street, our staffs favorites are:

La Tavola dello Squalo

This is a local place, specializing in burgers. It is a good cheap option to have a filling meal for a lower price, the flavor and quality of their ingredients is quite good and you can also get the burgers to go and enjoy them on the beach!

  • If you would like to spend the day at a beach club, remember that everything is more crowded and expensive during high season. Make sure to be there early to get a good lounge chair!
  • If you visit Kool Beach Club and enjoy their delicious breakfast, you can stay and enjoy the premises free of charge.
  • If you are on a budget, all beaches are public so bring a blanket, food and drinks and enjoy.
  • If you live in the area, ask if they have special prices for locals. Most places will offer a local discount on drinks, food and services, especially during the low season.

The Riviera Maya is a foodie’s paradise, with people from all over the world setting down roots in this beautiful country, and bringing their traditional, cultural recipes with them. Causing a fusion of culture and flavors with so many restaurants that you are sure to find one that suit your mood.

Set right on the Caribbean Sea, the Riviera Maya is known for its fresh seafood caught daily by the local fisherman.  There are so many options, you could have fish, shrimp, octopus, calamari, the list goes on and on, and you can’t visit the Riviera Maya without trying the seafood tacos. Trust me, you will not be disappointed and they will probably go down in the books as the best seafood tacos you have ever eaten. Here are the top budget friend, delicious spots to enjoy the best seafood tacos around.

La Floresta

La Floresta is a no frills, large outdoor restaurant with delicious food. The food is so good that the restaurant is always full. This is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike.

Immediately upon arriving you are served a bowl of homemade chips and Pico de Gallo, which is to die for. I suggest ordering the fresh fish tacos which are fried, light and crispy, cooked to perfection and the shrimp tacos which are delicious, they are both served in a homemade tortilla.  The tacos at La Floresta are only 20 pesos each. They also have a variety of ceviches and ice cold beer.

La Floresta is a cash only restaurant and they close early, so make sure to get there before 6:00pm.

Chiltepin

Chiltepin has really good food, ice cold beers and a small pool that you can take a dip in. What’s not to love!

This is one of my favorite place, it has reasonable prices good food with a mix of tourist and local alike. They offer a variety of tacos ranging from 22 – 40 pesos, so mix and match and try different flavors. They also have fresh ceviche and if you are not a fan of seafood they have arrachera tacos, hamburgers and beer bucket specials.

Los Aguachiles

Los Aguachiles is a popular restaurant in the Riviera Maya, so expect to see a crowd outside and to have to wait for a table. Los Aguachiles has many delicious menu items and a wide variety of seafood platters including aguachiles, tostadas, tacos and several others!

I have tried all the tacos on the menu and I can’t pick a favorite, they are all so delicious. We often bring our friends or family who are in town to Los Aguachiles and it is always a huge hit. Feel free to experiment at this restaurant because you will not be disappointed!

Mateo’s

Mateo’s is a beautiful place with a jungle setting to have a nice dinner. The price at Mateo’s ranges from 70 – 280 pesos, which is reasonable for Tulum.

The restaurant features a coffee shop, a bar and the restaurant, so there is something to suit everyone’s mood! Their classic margaritas is one of the best I have ever had. Mateo’s offers grilled fish, battered fish or shrimp tacos served on a flour or corn tortilla. The platter comes with four tacos, a side order of rice and beans for 120 – 170 pesos and you can also add a salad for 40 pesos. If you do not like seafood there are plenty of other options such as burgers, fajitas, and burritos.

Driving in the Riviera Maya: FAQ’s

You have planned everything and are feeling more and more ready for your trip to the wonderful Riviera Maya. If you are planning a discovery trip you have booking your flight and hotel and you start to wonder what about transportation?  Should I take a taxis or bus or should I rent a car? Maybe you are planning to move into your beautiful, new real estate property and you have packed everything up and you find yourself wondering how will I get around? Should I use public transportation or should I bring my car with me or should I invest in one when I get there.

The answer to those questions are always going to be different, depending on the objective of your trip, the places you are planning to visit and the length of your stay. In a previous article I talked about how to get around using a taxi or public transportation. Let’s discuss owning or rent a car and driving in the Riviera Maya.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions we have received from our clients planning a trip to the Mayan Riviera.

1.  How safe is it to drive in the Riviera Maya?

In general, the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula are very safe, the roads are in good condition and there are clearly marked road signs along the way. There are a few check-points in the outskirts of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, mainly the police are trying to deter people from smuggling drugs or other forbidden articles; they might ask for your documents, they may ask to check your trunk and then send you on your way.

2.   Do I need to get a special driver’s license?

No, if you are a tourist just make sure your driver’s license from your home country is valid. If you want to be extra-cautious you can get an International Driver’s Permit, but it is not required.

3.   What do I do if I get stopped by the police?

Above all, keep calm; have your documents ready such as your driver’s license, ID, Tarjeta de Circulación* and proof of insurance (*circulation permit for the car, if your car is rented this documents should be in the glove compartment).

4.   Is it safe to get my car into Mexico?

That depends, many people have done it and had no trouble at all and some have shared horror stories. There is some crime on the northern border of Mexico, if you are coming from the U.S. or Canada, it might be safer to ship your car and less of a hassle then driving your car across a foreign country.

My friend recently drove a newer car with American plates from the U.S. all the way to Riviera Maya without any problems. They said that they always felt safe and never saw any signs of violence or danger during their drive.

If you are considering bringing your car, you need to consider the following:

  • If I get stopped by the police do I know my rights? Do I speak enough Spanish to understand and be understood by the police?
  • Am I planning to drive all the way back to my home country?
  • A foreign car cannot be sold to a Mexican citizen, if you are planning to sell it and fly back home you might have to leave your car, unless you find another foreigner willing to buy it from you.
  • Is this car a popular brand or style in Mexico? Can I find a garage, parts or services for it?
  • Am I planning to stay for longer than six months? Am I going to drive to the border to renew the 6 month permit for my car?

5.   What do I have to keep in mind while driving in the Riviera Maya?

Driving tests in Mexico are not as strict as in other countries. I got my Playa del Carmen driver’s license by taking a 3 hour theory class, passing a theory test and a driving test that was basically driving around the block once.

Once in the Riviera Maya you need to keep the following in mind:

  • There are a lot of people that ignores the most basic driving laws, be extra cautious when driving in cities like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. There will be people trying to overtake you on the left lane, people trying to make a right or left turn from the center lane, people ignoring your indicators when you want to park, etc.
  • The Mayan Riviera gets millions of visitors every year, and they are unfamiliar with the roads. As a rule of thumb, if you see a car with red digits you’ll know it’s a rental, give that person extra space to maneuver and figure out where they want to go.
  • Cancun and Playa have lots of one way roads, keep your eyes open for signs or incoming traffic. Do not trust your GPS, sometimes it will try to send you on a one way street!
  • Taxi drivers are the worst, they drive like maniacs, stay away from them!
  • There are a lot of people traveling on bikes, mopeds and motorcycles: keep your eyes open as they ignore all the rules: they might try to overtake you from your left, move forward when the traffic is stationary going in between the cars and so many other maneuvers. Be careful!
  • Keep your eyes open for TOPES (speed bumps), they lurk everywhere and can damage your car. Sometimes they are unmarked and can seem to come out of nowhere. You can find them in the cities, in the little towns and even on the main road that connects Cancun and Tulum (Highway 307).

Top 25 Beaches in the Riviera Maya: A Day at Soliman Bay

Soliman Bay is one of the few places in the Riviera Maya where you get a sense of relaxation, solitude and privacy. If you visit Soliman Bay, you will find that there are no big hotels or crowds and the coast is mostly undeveloped, providing a break from many other popular destinations in the Riviera Maya.

This Bay has calm seas year around, thanks to the reef that blocks the big waves and undercurrents, making it ideal for families and water sports lovers. The beach is sandy, with a few rocks here and there; wearing water shoes is recommended to avoid injuries or cuts on your feet.

Soliman Bay: Getting there

This secluded beach beauty is located in the heart of Riviera Maya, but it offers a private, secluded feel for its visitors.

If you are traveling from Cancun, take the Federal Road 307 southbound and drive 65 miles (about an hour and fifteen minutes), you will pass Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras and Akumal. Soliman Bay is 9 miles south of Akumal (approximately 20 minutes), so keep your eyes open for the entrance. You can look for signs for the Oscar y Lalo restaurant, on the right hand side of the road and you reach Tulum you have gone too far.

Soliman Bay: Things to do

Keep in mind that Soliman Bay is a small semi-private gated community, there are a few villas and the owners value their privacy. The easiest way to access the beach at Soliman Bay is to visit one of their popular restaurants such as Chamico’s or the Sahara Cafe and enjoy a cold drink and let their professional staff pamper you.

The other way to experience this beautiful place is to stay in one of the hotels or vacation rentals and enjoy this unspoiled piece of paradise! Some of the things you can do during your stay at Soliman Bay is sunbathing, relaxing and enjoy a tropical drink. You could also go for a walk on the beach, kayak in the bay or go snorkel on the reef.

Remember that Soliman Bay is located between Akumal and Tulum, so if you want a little bit more action you could book a day tour or visit one of the many local attractions!

Soliman Bay: Recommendations

  • There is no way to access Soliman Bay beach for free, you have to be a guest or visit one of the local restaurants.
  • Most of the hotels with restaurant will let you enjoy a meal there, but just to be on the safe side make a reservation ahead of time.
  • Do not forget to bring your water shoes and snorkeling gear!
  • There is not a lot of tourism in the area so it is wise to bring cash with you; the closest ATM’s are in Tulum or Akumal.
