The Long Awaited Home Depot Opens in Playa del Carmen.

When possible, we try to buy our DIY materials and equipment in local shops, but sometimes we couldn’t find what we needed or the selection was limited; so we were forced to go to Cancun to get whatever we needed.

As I have said before, living in Playa del Carmen can spoil you. It sounds terrible when you have to say to your family or friends living overseas, ”Oh well, my weekend was ruined I had to go to Cancun!!”

Anyways, we were excited to see a Home Depot being opened here in Playa del Carmen, on the corner of Carretera Federal and Luis Donaldo Colosio. This is the 109th store opened in Mexico, the second in Quintana Roo. It brings 100 new jobs that benefits local families.

home depot playa del carmen

We are sure both professional builders and weekend DYI -ers are excited to have this store in our city. Home Depot offers all sorts of products and materials to build, remodel or decorate your Playa Del Carmen Property.

The governor Roberto Borge Angulo leaded the official traditional “board-cutting ceremony”, surrounded by government officials, suppliers, customers and the general community. After the ceremony The Home Depot donated 100,000 pesos in construction materials to the local branch of “Save The Children”, to help kids in need.

The store looks like any other Home Depot in North America; however it is interesting to see the differences in products that are available. Also, most of the Mexico real estate properties are sold missing closets, kitchens and appliances so Home Depot offers a huge section of products to furnish these areas.

home depot playa del carmen

Expect a highly knowledgeable staff that speaks Spanish, there is also some English speaking staff members that can help you to find the right product for your home. Since it is hurricane season, it is a good opportunity to buy materials to weatherproof your home: seals for doors and windows, sealing paint or cool roof coating.

Visit our local Home Depot to find everything you need to remodel or decorate your dream home.

Now as I am sure you already know, dental and medical prices are quite simply ‘out of control’ in most places around the world… while quality of the work itself relatively stays the same.
So what gives?

Well according to recent studies, increasing insurance premiums and frivolous lawsuits worldwide have raised the operating cost of doing business to mammoth proportions, forcing many dental practitioners to increase their prices. While some others studies suggest that ‘good ol American greed’ is to blame for the rising cost of dental work.

Whatever the case may be, we do have a solution for you: Dental Bio-Esthetics… accredited, trustworthy and skilled dentistry here in the Riviera Maya!

With state of the art equipment, cutting edge technology and an incredibly skilled and dedicated staff, Dental Bio-Esthetics in Playa del Carmen, headed by Dr. Michelle Spears, DDS (a licensed, practicing and skilled dentist from the United States) is making the dream her dental practice slogan “We can make you smile again” a reality for many people in need.

… And did I mention… at a fraction of the price of all other dental institutes worldwide!

Now, you and your family can have it all: a wonderful and exciting vacation for the whole family and the confident and beautiful smile you always wanted! And all at the same price you would spend for just the dental procedures alone in the United States and Canada.

At Dental Bio-Esthetics, they can craft you a comprehensive treatment plan, coordinate transportation to and from the Dental Bio-Esthetic while in Playa Del Carmen, arrange for transportation to and from the airport and coordinate your flight and hotel arrangements depending on your specific needs and wants.

ViDAS Gives Back In Playa Del Carmen

ViDAS held its Annual Sterilization Campaign in Playa del Carmen this week. ViDAS the Spanish word for lives, is a non-profit organization made up of Veterinarians, veterinary students and other animal lovers dedicated to improving the lives of animals and people through veterinary medicine and education.

 photo vidassalud_zps47c2ab10.jpg

ViDAS conducted its first clinic in 2002 with only six veterinary students and two veterinarians. The five day clinic managed to safely sterilize 100 cats and dogs. ViDAS founding members were veterinary students of Colorado State University. Through Dr. Ruth Parkin, one of the founding member’s tireless efforts, ViDAS has grown since that very first clinic in 2002. ViDAS has sterilized over 11,500 animals in over eight different cities around the Yucatan Peninsula.

 photo esterilizacion_zps84e97db9.jpg

The six day Annual ViDAS clinic in Playa del Carmen boasted almost 100 volunteers, and around 30 of those volunteers traveled all the way from the United States to aid this great cause. The contribution of many organizations like IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) and local Coco’s Cat Rescue helped to make this week long event a success. It was a record breaking week, ViDAS sterilized around 1,600 cats and dogs.

At the clinic cats and dogs are kept separate to not add stress to the cats. The surgery takes about 15 minutes and then the animal are moved into the first recovery room where they recover from the anesthesia. Then the cat or dog is moved into the second recovery room were their family can join them to provide comfort and aid in their recovery.

 photo nintildeoygato_zps4094e5b3.jpg

The ViDAS clinic is so important to Playa del Carmen because not only does it aid in decreasing the overpopulation of cats and dogs through sterilization but ViDAS also provides much needed education to the community.
ViDAS is constantly working toward their goal: to become more productive and effective at each clinic, to educate locals about the problems and solutions to pet overpopulation and to work with local veterinarians and municipalities on sustainable and humane solutions to overpopulation.
Coco’s Cat Rescue is a local non-profit organization with a no kill policy and is dedicated to reducing the population of unwanted pets in Playa del Carmen. Coco’s Cat Rescue has many project such as offering low cost or free sterilization on a daily basis to pets, street and rescued animals.

Living in Mexico: The Riviera Maya Ultimate Bucket List

So now that you own a slice of gorgeous Mexico real estate, you have all this free time in your hands.  You find yourself being more active then you’ve ever been.  When you look out your window and see your beautiful Caribbean paradise… you want get out there… and enjoy living in Mexico. So why not start with the ultimate bucket list that lives inside your head.  For most dare devils, a bucket list favorite might be something like… swimming with sharks.

Well let’s not get that crazy.

You would like to be alive long enough to enjoy living in Mexico.  So might I suggest swimming with the “whale sharks”?

(If you can’t see the video, click here.)

What is a whale shark? Is it a whale or is it a shark? Well they are a shark.

“What! And you want me to swim with them?”

Even though they are the largest known fish, with a record of 41.5 feet long, they are gentle giants.  Whale sharks are very docile fish that pose no danger to humans.

The whale shark is named after the whale because of their sheer size and feeding habits. The whale shark is a filter feeder, swimming close to the surface with their mouths open surviving on a buffet of plankton.

 photo swimmingwiththewhaleshark_zpsdb419200.jpg

Whale shark season is from June to September.  That is when the whale sharks migrate to Isla Mujeres to feed; an Island located just north of Cancun.  All you have to do is throw on your snorkel gear, jump in the water and swim with these massively impressive but gentle giants.

And guess what, you’re now swimming with sharks… and you get to live to tell about it!

Be adventurist, enjoy living in Mexico, go swim with the “sharks”.

And cross it off your list…

… It’ll be our little secret.

Playa del Carmen: A Great Place to Find a Habit

Now I know what you’re thinking… and shame on you!  Get your head out of the gutter.

Playa Del Carmen and the entire Riviera Maya in fact, is a great place to pick up a new and exciting habit.  A GOOD HABIT!  Or shall I say… hobby.  With its rich and diverse culture, tropical atmosphere and history-rich location, the Riviera Maya is an exciting and mystical place where one can find themselves immersed in the mystery and mysticism of this ancient and revered landscape.

Here are 3 non-conventional “habits” one can easily pick up here in the Riviera Maya:

  1. Become the next “Indiana Jones”!
Archeology is a huge part of the life and culture, both past and present, here in the Riviera Maya. From the grand pyramids of Chichen Itza to the majestic sea side landscape of Tulum, one can find out first-hand what attracts and inspires the “Indiana Jones” types and why experiencing century old relic and temples can be so life miraculous.  The awe-inspiring feeling one get when he/she gazes upon a monument that predates most world country’s is one that can’t be described; but must be seen for any aspiring to be the next “Dr. Jones”.
  2. Become the next “Sam Malone” (Cheers, NBC)
Now once again, get your head out of the gutter, and entertain this!  Like the unforgettable character from the beloved US television series “Cheers”, you too can be the next guy “where everybody knows your name”.  Why not try your hand at becoming and bartender?.  With more bars and nightlife per capita than any other city here in the Riviera Maya, those people with a flare for the exciting, a passion for enjoyment and an ingratiation towards the party lifestyle should try this noble and time honored profession.  Who knows, maybe you’ll turn out to be the next “Sam Malone”… and get as much “action” as he did!
  3. And lastly, become the next “Jacque Cousteau”
The vast and virtually unexplored underwater ocean frontier is not only rich with life and discovery, but a hot and sought after hobby and profession.  Becoming a scuba instructor, and maybe just getting your scuba dive certification , can not only be fun, but research has shown that those people who work and play in, or near water have longer lifespans and have a reported 10-20 point decrease in overall blood-pressure.  Take a dive… and live longer.  Sounds good to me!

Now if you have any questions or comments about any of these unique and “life extending” hobbies, or would like some information on real estate opportunity’s that can realize these ideas here in
Playa Del Carmen, please don’t hesitate to contact us here at TOP MEXICO REAL ESTATE.

Getting around Xcacel – Xcacelito

What a wonderful day to be at the beach! What about visitingXcacel- Xcacelito?

Close to the small town of Chemuyil, this beach is well known among locals, far away from the crowds and closer to the way mother nature intended beaches to be. Sand, sun and coconut trees welcome you to one of the most secluded beaches in the Mayan Riviera.

Immerse yourself in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, sunbath in the soft white sand and enjoy the sound of the waves and the breeze swaying the coconut trees.

Xcacel-Xcacelito is a nature reserve, it is protected by the federal government since it is one of the most important turtle nesting sites in Mexico and a vast area of mangroves. This reserve is about 362 hectares of pristine jungle, and one of the few beaches without major constructions.

If you go to Xcacel-Xcacelito, it is important to take your own drink and food, as well as chairs, umbrella, icebox or whatever you need. The place is quite basic and it only has a few toilets and showers available, there is no shops nearby so this is a trip you have to plan ahead of time.

Getting to Xcacel can be a little be tricky, it is not signaled on the road. It is located between Pueblo Chemuyil and Xel-Ha. There is a small sign but it is about 3 square feet, so keep your eyes open for a dirt road going to the beach.

There is plenty of things to do: from sunbathing to snorkeling in the nearby reef. Go for a short walk in the jungle and find a cenote with pristine waters or just enjoy the view and nature and relax. We are sure it is going to become one of your favorite places!!

It is important to get there early, since the closing time is enforced by 4:00 p.m. to make sure the turtles feel safe to make their nests on the beach. There is a voluntary donation of 10-20 pesos per person, this money is used to keep the place running.

What are you waiting for? Go ahead and have fun at Xcacel-Xcacelito.

Playa del Carmen, a Foodie’s Dream

If you are considering moving or retiring to Playa del Carmen, you will be delighted to discover the wide variety of restaurant options available, with something new to try every day.

Living near 5th avenue or downtown neighborhoods will allow you to step out and experience the lively restaurant scene in Playa del Carmen.

For ex-pats everywhere, being away from our favorite foods is hard. One day you’ll wake up craving a juicy hamburger, BBQ ribs or chili con carne and lucky for you there is places that offer American and Canadian Style food.

Walk on the beach to get to Wah Wah’s, enjoy the view and their cold drinks while trying their BBQ Chicken or BBQ ribs with all the trimmings, They also offer Tex-Mex and traditional Mexican food as well as brick oven pizza and live music in the evening. Maybe you are looking for the kind of bar where everybody knows your name, with comfort food and an American ambiance, then maybe you should try Mom’s with their weekly changing menus and English speaking staff, you’ll forget you are in Mexico.

If you want to experience the “Real” Mexican food, maybe you can take a stroll on 10th or 30th avenues, with their tacos, tortas and tamales stands as well as a variety of local delicacies: sea food, Yucatecan food and many others.

There is also plenty of options for the Vegan or Vegetarian, most restaurants offer vegetarian options and you will find chefs willing to accommodate your requests. For Vegans one of the most popular spots its “La Senda” on 10th avenue, with its traditional mushroom pozole and many others soups, sandwiches and smoothies completely free of animal products. Fruit juices and Fruit cocktails are a Mexican staple, you will find street vendors selling diced fruit with optional lime and chili powder almost in every local park, so fresh fruit is always a good option.

If you are an Italian food lover like myself, you’ll find that the ever growing Italian community in Playa is always opening new restaurants. Local favorites and both located  on 34th street, Al Volo with their homemade pastas and Ciao Pizzeria with their brick oven and delicious pizzas. These restaurants use the freshest ingredients and will charge a fraction of the cost of the restaurants located on 5th avenue.

Playa del Carmen has a growing community of expats from all over the world, this means there is a great variety of restaurants with cuisines from many regions including: Asian, European, Latin American and Mediterranean.

If you are considering moving or retiring to Mexico, a big part of your new life will be exploring places and finding your own favorites. There is so many choices there is always going to be something new and exciting but little by little you’ll find the spots you can’t live without.

10 Things to do on a rainy day: Riviera Maya Style

After planning your holiday carefully and making a long list of fun under the sun activities, you find yourself stuck in your hotel. The weather forecast is not looking good and you find yourself wondering if there anything you can do.

Even though the Mayan Riviera is famous for its beaches and many other water activities, a little bit of rain shouldn’t ruin your holiday. So go ahead and find about 10 different activities you can do on a rainy day, Riviera Maya Style.

  1. Chill: After all, that is what holidays are for. Book yourself on a day spa. Spend time in the sauna, get a massage, have a mani-pedi or that body wrap you always wanted and let the staff pamper you.
  2. Get dirty: Book a day at the ATV Park, mud makes things even more fun. The roads are slippery, which makes the experience so much better. We bet you it is going to be an amazing unforgettable experience.
  3. Go underground: It doesn’t matter if it is pouring outside, go ahead and have a tour at an underground river. This is a unique experience that you will never forget!!
  4. Have a private class: There is so many things you can learn, why not try that activity you were always curious about?. Do you want to master a few salsa moves? To try yoga or pilates on a one on one lesson? Learn how to make your favorite Mexican dish?? The options are endless.
  5. Go warrior: Try Gotcha, use your strategy and stamina and defeat your enemies. The rain and slippery floor makes the experience so much more fun!
  6. Have a cultural experience: Visit a museum or art gallery, go to the theater or enjoy a good film.
  7. Try Mexican hot chocolate. Chocolate comes originally from Mexico, where it was considered an aphrodisiac. Cocoa is roasted, grinded with sugar and spices and then added to milk or hot water, you will find it is different to hot cocoa. If you are feeling particularly adventurous have the chocolate with chili, it will blow your mind.
  8. Dive or snorkel: Enjoy the beauty of the reefs and the cenotes, you won’t mind getting wet if you are already under water.
  9. Take a jeep tour to the Sian K’aan Reserve: Two words, mud and 4×4 cars.
  10. Go shopping: try a covered shopping mall, visit the local grocery store or the local market. We are sure you will find something to buy.

Having a god time is all about attitude, do not let a few days of bad weather ruin your holiday. Go around with an open mind and make sure to have fun every single day.

Living in Mexico, Childcare Options

Many clients planning to relocate to Mexico with their families, ask us about childcare arrangements. As working parents, we are happy to share our experiences, hoping to help you find the right option for your family.

You might not be thinking of any childcare services, after all you are moving to Mexico to relax and spend more time with your kids, right? But once your and your family finally settle down, you might want to take that yoga lesson in the morning, or go out for drinks with your friends and find there is no one you trust lo leave your kids with.

Living away from home means you leave behind your family and friends, so you find yourself sitting indoors with your kids going slowly but inexorably mad, wishing you could call for grandma to come and rescue you.

Before this happens to you, know that is plenty of alternatives for childcare, here some of the most popular:

  1. Fulltime Daycare:
There is plenty of daycare centers in the Mayan Riviera area, with services like meals, homework support and extracurricular activities. This is an excellent option for parents that have to work on a regular schedule and some of them cater for children with parents working overnight.
Daycare centers fees vary, according to the area and services provided, as well as the group size and teacher/student ratio.  Make sure to ask around for recommendations, ask to visit the place to see their daily routines and get a feel of the place. Make sure they have emergency exits, fire extinguishers and First aid equipment and that they have an emergency service and insurance included in their fees.
  2. Daycare by the hour: this is an excellent option if you want to be at home most of the time, but want to have a night out or run errands without your children. This service is offered in limited places and can be bought by the hour or have a prepaid fee and buy a package and use it in a certain amount of time.
The available activities are limited, these spaces tend to be a big play area, and most of them won’t offer meals or help with homework. Keep in mind that most of these centers have a TV playing continuously, which can add up to your child’s allotted TV time.
A daycare by the hour won’t have enrolling fees so you can try different ones and see
which one is the most convenient for you and your children.
  3. School:  If you only need a few more hours to finish your errands or your part-time job, most schools in the area offer of an extended schedule. This means your children will have lunch at school, then homework support and an extracurricular activity of their choosing.
For younger children, schools offer classes for kids as young as two, starting with maternal (nursery) and the three grades in kindergarten. Schools tend to be more expensive than a childcare center, but they tend to have a stronger curriculum and developmental activities.
If you have older children this can be a good option for you, since you will have one stop to drop them and pick them up.

  4. Nanny
: Having a nanny has been a wonderful experience for our family, it’s affordable, it’s convenient and you cannot imagine life without them. Taking the kids to take beach? Yes!, Going on a weekend trip? Why not? You’ll find that having an extra pair of hands to help with the kids does wonders. You get to sit and relax, you chew on your meal for the first time since the birth of your first born – nine years ago. If you want to go this route, the easiest way to find a nanny is asking your friends or other mothers with kids. Make sure to ask for references and be sure to be around for the first days or weeks until you and your kids feel at ease with her.

We have tried a mix of all of the above, in different stages of our children’s growth and it has been a fantastic experience. People is really big on families, but go ahead and try different options to see which one is the best for you.
