Mexico’s Charm Comes in Simple Images – A Car in a Village

Imagine this – a traditional Mexican town, with brightly painted homes, an old VW parked on the road …

Well, you don’t have to imagine.  Here’s a picture:

If you live in Mexico, scenes like this are very common.  Notice the man fixing his own car an the roadside.  Back home, this may indicated some sort of emergency repairs, but here, this is normal; even in repair shops in working-class communities will have a car or two on the roadside while they work on them.

Also notice the VW Beetle; “Bugs” (or “Bochos” in Spanish) went out of production 10 years ago, in 2003, so relatively new Beetles can still be found on the road.

As I’ve said before, now and then I just like to do a Google search for images on Mexico.  This is the second time I’m sharing some of these pictures, and I think I’ll do some more in the future.

Colosio Beach in Playa del Carmen is One of Those Quiet Places I Love

As I’ve pointed out recently, I love getting up in the morning, and just going out for a relaxing walk along a quiet, empty beach – I usually do this after dropping the kids off at school.

We all love getting into the action and doing stuff.  But we also have those quiet moments just to enjoy the sound of the waves and the feeling of sand on our feet!

Luckily for me, I have one such beach just a short walk from my home – Colosio Beach.

One of the biggest charms of this beach is that it’s very quiet and natural; you feel you’re miles away from town, but it’s right next to the heart of all the action downtown Playa.

Recently, a couple of new hotels and condos have been opened along this beach, but they are a little back from the beach with the natural vegetation still growing next to the sand, preserving the tranquil atmosphere.

Take a look at some pictures:

Visit the Beautiful Silver Town of Taxco in Central Mexico

Mexico Discovery TripsNestled in the rugged hills of central Mexico is the silver mining town of Taxco. Little white homes and shops line steeply sloped streets; the entire town is on a hillside.  Standing above the town is the classic old church, which looks taller than it actually is since it’s located uphill from most of the town.

I simply love walking around the town.  It feels like you’re stepping into a different time.

The Silver

Than there is the silver.  Taxco has remained true to its mining town heritage with silver shops on every corner, selling necklaces, rings, figures, engravings and much more.  The pure silver is of high quality and prices are low.

Whether you a silver fanatic or not, I’m sure you’ll find a few knickknacks to take home.  I always do.

As you can see in the picture below, the shops selling silver are much more in an informal “market” style than an elegant jewelry shop.  For me, this is part of the charm.

How to Get There

Most retirees tend to settle in the popular beachfront locations in Mexico, or in the two interior towns of Chapala or San Miguel del Allende.  But getting to a place like Taxco is not so difficult.

Very cheap plane tickets can be found to Mexico City from the places like Cancun – often under $100 USD round trip.  If you fly to the nearby city of Toluca, you’re even closer to Taxco (as well as the quaint lakefront town of Valle de Bravo) and you will skip out on Mexico City’s traffic.

The bus ride is about 2 hours from Toluca.  Mexico City should only be about 20 minutes more by distance, but traffic could add another hour.

Now, this sounds like a lot of travel just to get to a little silver town, even though it is picturesque and quaint; however, there are a number of beautiful little gems hidden in these hills, and it’s worth a discovery trip of a few days – or even a week or two – in this part of central Mexico.

More Pictures

This is a beautiful view of the town at sunset:

Here you can see how the houses and shops line the steep streets:

Thi is the picturesque town square, right in front of the church, as is always the case in Mexico:

I hope that you have the pleasure to visit Taxco one day in your Mexico retirement!

Tulum is One of the Best Places for Camping! – Pictures

When people think of traveling or vacations in Mexico, they think of resorts, hotels, luxury homes, comfortable condos, etc.  All of this is readily found at great prices, so it makes sense.  But what many people don’t realize is that Mexico has extraordinary camping locations.  Tulum is one of these.

Camping in Tulum is excellent for many reasons.  You’re right on the world’s most beautiful beaches.  The weather is always warm.  You’re surrounded by nature, but at the same time, there’s always a little shop or stand with food and snacks nearby.  The starts and moon are simply amazing, as are the sunrises (as I pointed out on Monday.)

Take a look at some of my pictures from our recent camping trip on Tulum’s beaches:

Camping in Tulum just feels so good, so relaxing, so refreshing! Of course, being able to go take a dip in the warm Caribbean Sea in the morning is a wonderful way to start a day.

I recommend for anyone to try camping in Tulum or other parts of Mexico if they get the chance.

Camping in Tulum, I Saw the Most Spectacular Sunrises

A couple of weeks ago, we went camping in Tulum.  I got up before daybreak to get some pictures of the sun rising over the Caribbean – some of the most spectacular sunrises you’ll see, especially in the setting of the Mayan jungle, wide, sandy beaches and clear water of the Caribbean.

To start, take a look at the moon over the sea earlier in the night (you might have to adjust your screen a little see it well):

Now, here’s a sequence of pictures, showing the sunrise from the first light over the horizon, until the sun is fully up in the sky.  Notice the fishermen’s boats lined up just off the beach:

As anyone will know who’s gone camping, it’s easier to wake up earlier – and, here in Tulum, in the middle of nature, with the sound of birds and the waves, it’s just that much easier yet.

Next week, I’ll share some pictures of the rest of the camping experience.

It’s Time to Redecorate Your Home – Oaxaca Style!

Don’t you think it would be a great time to redecorate your home? People are always talking about “out with the old, in with the new.” Why not try “out with the new, in with the old” – or the traditional, at least!

Take a look at some of these fine household decorations, arts and crafts that I found at last week’s Oaxaca culture fair.  In this first picture, notice the busts of a Mexican president made of the same materials and along side of the ancient pre-hispanic pottery, skulls and animal figures.  (I believe the president is Benito Juarez, given recognition in Mexico similar to that of Abraham Lincoln in the U.S.)

You might also want to add a few candles to your new decor, in these clay candle holders, made onsite:

These fans would look nice on the wall, but if you’re living in Playa del Carmen, on the beach, I would suggest keeping them on the coffee table so people can actually use them:

Finally, while you’re in the process of redecorating, you might as well throw out the old pots and pans, and perhaps the dishes too, and try something more “down to earth:”

I love these culture fairs that we enjoy here in Playa del Carmen.  I makes it easy to get a taste of other parts of Mexico. While traveling to these places is always the best way to go, it might help you decide which location to travel to first!

Oaxaca’s Traditional Toys Mix the Old and the New

As I pointed out on Friday, last week there was a fair presenting various aspects of Oaxaca’s culture here in Playa del Carmen.  As I said in that post, which was about the food, Oaxaca is one of the more distinct regions of Mexico, on the south end of the country’s Pacific Coast.

Today, I want to share some pictures of toys we took.  I love seeing the toys, not only because we have two younger kids, but also just because of the colors, the variety and the style.

Today, they’re in a slide show:

beatlo's Toys - Traditional Mexico album on Photobucket

(If you can’t see the slide show, click here.)

Notice the variety; some are simple, fun, colorful traditional toys, like the rattles, some are figures that include religious scenes, history and day to day life and some, like the maps, are educational.  Yet, a single colorful style can be seen in all of them.

Also  notice the puzzles with Disney figures on them.  First of all, I don’t suppose they bothered getting copyright approval.  Secondly, notice that they also end up with the same colorful, authentically Mexican look!

Oaxaca Comes to Playa del Carmen with Delicous Food!

As I’ve said before, Mexico is actually a combination of various distinct regions each with its own culture, customs and traditions.  One of the benefits of Playa del Carmen is that throughout the year there are culture fairs where artists and vendors from various regions will sell food, handicrafts, artwork and clothing among other items, as well as have presentations of music and dance.

This week, one such culture fair is taking place in the city square presenting the culture of Oaxaca, pronounced “Wa-HA-ca.”  Oaxaca is a region which has gained little attention internationally but is fairly well recognized within Mexico as a distinct culture.  It is the southern most state on the Pacific Coast, bordering Guatemala.

Over the next few days, I’m going to share pictures of the various items which artisans and vendors were selling.  Today, I’ll start with the big #1 – food!

First of all, one of the items that makes a fair like this very difficult for me is the bread – which is almost too good to resist!  It is freshly baked, on site, and the smell of fresh, sweet bread fills the air:

Here, you can see the bakers at work:

Mexico retirement - traditional food

Next, take a look at all the different ice cream flavors – it includes some normal ones like walnut and strawberry, but also some more exotic flavors like tequila and cheese. One is “A Oaxacan Kiss” (Beso Oaxaceno). I wonder what that flavor would be!

The candies – SO MANY delicious candies:

As you can see, the sweets are my favorites! But, moving to the savory flavors, here are some curious items. This next pictures shows “chapulines” which are roasted grasshoppers. Surprisingly, they’re quite tasty! People eat them like you would roasted peanuts (which were being sold in the bin next to it):

Now, these next two pictures are seasonings and sauces made with the same roasted grasshoppers as a key ingredient:

And now, one of my favorites – mole! I don’t think we’ve written about this before; it’s a thick, rich, somewhat spicy sauce that is usually served over chicken. As in traditional markets, a fair like this offers many varieties of different colors and sweetnesses:

You’ll notice that this last picture is of “pepian” which is a similar enough, that for the sake of this post, we’ll just categorize as “mole.” In the future I hop to dedicate an entire post to mole.

You’ll also notice that many of the mole stands sell round disks of chocolate. Chocolate is actually one of the key ingredients in mole. Oaxaca is known for its chocolate. These disks are melted into hot milk to make hot chocolate.

Finally, there were a few booths of mezcal, the liquor for which Oaxaca is famous. You’ll notice the packets tied to the tops of the bottles, which have salt mixed with ground up worms – as in the kind you find in tequila:

One Monday, we’ll see some pictures of traditional toys, followed by other handicrafts.

This is Why I Love Xaman-Ha Beach in Playacar Phase I

Yesterday, over at our other blog, Doug Morgan wrote piece about the beautiful beachfront homes in Playacar Phase I (see Playacar Phase I is Pure Beachfront Relaxation and Comfort!)  Today, I just want to add to this, that whether you live in that beautiful, upscale community or not, the beach – called Xaman Ha – is one of the nicest places to spend time in Playa del Carmen!

This is for several reasons.

  1. One is that they are simply some of the nicest beaches – very wide, with the soft, warm, white sand that has made the region famous and that bright turquoise water.
  2. Another is that, as Doug mentioned yesterday, all the shops and restaurants of downtown are just a walk away, making the beaches the ideal balance between quiet relaxation and convenient access to just about everything.
  3. Finally, these beaches are alive; although they are most certainly exclusive and quiet, along their wide, spacious stretches, there are children playing, beach volleyball games, lovers of all ages walking hand in hand and families enjoying picnics.  Because they are so spacious, all this can happen without disrupting their tranquil and exclusive nature.  You can choose to do any of these activities, enjoy watching others, or just sit down and let it all take place somewhere behind you, where you really don’t notice it, except for the occasional laughter of children in the distance.

Let’s take a look at some pictures:

And, if you love nature, there are also large green areas in Playacar, near the beach and back from the beach, that preserve the region’s original jungle. Notice the tapir in the middle of the picture:

Even if you don’t live in Playacar, this is simply a wonderful beach to enjoy!

When Beaches are Full of Tourists, You CAN Escape – At Xcalacoco Beach

One of the appealing points about Playa del Carmen is that there are many people from North America, Europe and many other parts of the world coming and going all the time.  Yet, there comes a time in the late winter/early spring when you’re just waiting for the crowds to disappear for a while so you can enjoy a quiet beach.

Yet, the good news is that in a few places, you can enjoy this even during the busiest tourist season in the winter.  One such beach that offers quieter, relaxed enjoyment of the sunshine away from the crowds is Xcalacoco Beach, just 10 minutes out of town, to the north.
